Symbian is here to stay, at least for the next couple of years. So, we are here with the Nokia X5-01 review. This device was launched at CommunicAsia last June and hit Indian shores late last year.At the first look, I didn't liked the squarish design of this device and found it a bit girly. Nokia X5-01 is an X-series phone, known for its music features. As usual, this handset comes with a special key for the music player, however the previous/rewind and next/forward keys were missing from this handset. This handset comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, which helps you to type fast and stay connected with your friends on the go. Nokia X5-01 runs on the Symbian S60v3 operating system and it comes with some great features such as a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, 3G connectivity and more. Is this handset worth buying? Check out our exclusive review to learn more.

Box Contents:

  • Nokia X5-01
  • Nokia BL-5F 950 mAh Li-Ion battery
  • Nokia Travel Charger AC-6N
  • Nokia 2 GB microSD card MU-37
  • Nokia Connectivity Cable CA-101D
  • Nokia Headset WH-102
  • User Guide

Design:
The Nokia X5-01 features an unique squarish design. This handset also comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. The slide mechanism on this handset is quite smooth as compared to the other slider phones in the same price range. The front side of this handset is made up of plastic, while the sides and back of this handset is made up of stainless steel.

On the front side, you will find a 2.3 inch TFT screen. This handset has a sharper display under normal lighting conditions, but it becomes almost unreadable in direct sunlight. Below the display, there are three keys on the left side, as well as three keys on the right side. A 5-ways navigation key is also placed below the display. Along with the usual left/right selection key and the call/end key, you will find an additional home key on the left and the music key on the right. The keys on the front were not comfortable, since when I tried pressing the right selection key, the music key was pressed accidentally. The same problem was faced while I tried to use the left selection key.

3.5mm headset jack and Micro USB/charger connecter

Loudspeaker

On the top of this device, you will find a 3.5mm headset jack and a Micro USB/charger connecter. The loudspeaker is situated at the bottom of this device. Even though, Nokia X5-01 has 3G capabilities, a front-facing camera was missing in this device. It means that, you cannot video call with your friends using this device.

This handset has a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and battery with metallic casing on its back. On the right side of this device, you will find the volume keys, while on the left side, there are no keys at all. Even though, this handset has a 5 megapixel camera, a much needed camera button was missing on this device.

User Interface, OS and more:

Nokia X5-01 runs on the Symbian S60v3 operating system. I'm already familiar with this OS, since I have already used the S60v3 based device for more than 3 years, so using this handset was not a problem. Even if you are new to this OS, it won't take more than a day to get the things right.

On the home screen, you can directly add your favourite contacts as well as shortcut for most used applications. If you don't like the current layout of your home screen, then you can easily change it from 5 different standby layout, available under themes. It also has 4 different customizable menu Grid, List, Horseshoe and V-shaped. Out of these, I personally liked the Grid and V-shaped menu.

This handset has Push Mail, SNS app as well as chat client support out of the box. The native email client currently supports Ovi Mail, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Hotmail and other email services. The chat client supports Google Talk, MSN Messenger, Ovi Chat and Yahoo Messenger. This handset also comes with pre-loaded Facebook, Twitter and Hi5 applications.

Nokia X5-01 comes with Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. This handset allows you to download thousands of free as well as paid applications from the OVI Store. The in-built browser was pretty good. You can even download and install alternate browser such as Opera Mobile from the Ovi Store, in case you didn't liked the default browser.

This handset does not fit properly in hands, thanks to the small and bulky design. Even during the call, I was not able to properly hear the voice. And holding the phone, during a call is a pain. Even a basic Nokia phone works perfectly, but this device has some issues, due to its squarish design. You might also have to face problems while carrying this device in your jeans pockets.

The battery of this device was pretty good. On a full charge, it managed to stay alive for more than 4 days with few calls, browsing, playing music, games and chatting. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard was quite comfortable. I was easily able to type text messages as well as status updates and tweets on the go.

Music:
Nokia X5-01 is a music phone, but it lacks physical previous/rewind and next/forward keys. The music player on this phone is similar to other X-series phones. It supports MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA audio formats. Nokia X5-01 also comes with the standard 3.5 mm audio jack. The music playback is pretty good, but the bundled headphones are not up to the mark. If you are planning to purchase this handset, as an alternate to your music player, then I would suggest you to connect your favorite pair of headphones in this handset to enjoy the music. It plays music for more than 20 hours on a single charge. This handset also comes with an unique feature, which allows you to play random songs, just by spinning the device.

Camera:

Nokia X5-01 features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash. The maximum resolution for an image is 2592 x 1944 pixels. It has different scene modes such as Automatic, Portrait, Landscape, Sport, Night and Night Portrait. The self-timer allows you to automatically click a picture after an interval of 2, 10 or 20 seconds. The sequence mode lets you capture sequential images at a pre-defined interval of 10 seconds to 30 minutes. Most of the images were noisy in the night, but images clicked during the day were pretty good. Nokia X5-01 is not a camera phone, but the end results are quite impressive. Sadly, the video recording was not up to the mark.

Conclusion:

Nokia X5-01 is a pretty good phone, but it does not have any exceptional features. The headset provided in the box is not up to the mark. You should better, connect your favourite pair of headphones while listening to music. The much needed video camera and GPS is missing in this handset. Even though the slider is smooth and QWERTY keyboard is amazing, I had to face lots of problem while holding this handset during the call, thanks to its small and squarish design. Girls would love the design of this handset, but boys will definitely stay away from purchasing a girly handset. This handset comes with a price tag of Rs.9,974. If you are looking for a QWERTY handset, then I would suggest you to buy the Nokia E5 smartphone, since it has some great features, compared to this phone.

Pros:

  • Excellent QWERTY keyboard
  • Smooth slider
  • Metallic sides and back
  • Great music playback
  • Excellent connectivity options
  • Good battery life

Cons:

  • Not-so-attractive design
  • Display not clearly visible under sun-light
  • Poor headphones
  • Camera not up to the mark
  • No front-facing camera
  • No GPS

Last week a little gem of a game was released into the App Store called Tactical Soldier Undead Rising [$4.99]. Now, I know what you must be thinking, and yes the whole zombie thing has totally been done to death (undeath?). But the highly tactical turn-based gameplay in Tactical Soldier will have you forgetting all about that, and the zombie theme is actually used to great effect in telling an interesting story and creating tension in the game.

You play as a soldier in a military base where an experiment has gone awfully wrong. Scientists have developed a chemical in an effort to create super soldiers, but instead it ends up turning them into bloodthirsty zombies. Yeah, it's a bit cliché, but it fits the game well. The graphics are entirely rendered in 3D, and although the character models aren't the most detailed, the environments have a wonderfully creepy mood to them. The story unfolds with comic book-style cutscenes which do a good job of telling the gritty tale.

The first thing Tactical Soldier does right is offering a great user interface for interacting with the game. Pinch and swipe gestures allow you to move the camera at any time to wherever is needed to give you the best angle. Gameplay is grid-based and a smart use of single and double tapping allows you to have great control with all of your movements. The touch detection can be a little finicky at times, but overall the game is incredibly intuitive and feels built from the ground up with touch screens in mind.

The single player story-driven campaign in Tactical Soldier requires a great deal of strategy to be successful. Careful conservation of ammo and deciding what weapons to equip your squad of soldiers is key. It's a really challenging game, but thankfully there are fairly spaced checkpoints so you can retry areas if you're tactics don't work out for the best. And you will die… a lot. But it never feels frustrating, rather, it's fun to rethink how things went wrong and retry a scenario with a tweaked game plan.

You start out controlling a single soldier, but will add more playable characters to your group as you come across survivors while exploring the huge military base. Experience is earned for defeating enemies, and you'll gain skill points which can be used to increase various statistics in each of your soldiers. Weapon and equipment slots are also limited, and you'll need to make some tough decisions as to how to equip and upgrade your team. Enemies also start out fairly tame but quickly ramp up in difficulty and ferocity, including several tough boss encounters throughout the game.

Tactical Soldier is a pleasant surprise for fans of tactical turn-based strategy games. It's incredibly challenging, but as such it's also incredibly satisfying when you figure out the best way to deal with the many scenarios in the game. A player in our forums described the game as Resident Evil Tactics, should that game actually exist, and I think that totally nails it. It's a universal game, and although I've been mostly enjoying it on the larger screen of the iPad it's also very playable on the smaller screen of the iPhone and iPod touch. If you're looking for something new to scratch your tactical itch, then Tactical Soldier Undead Rising is highly recommended.

Motorola Milestone XT800 (Motorola Glam ) is the company's first Dual SIM Android phone. This phone is the India's first Android powered Dual SIM Touch-screen smartphone. In this review we shall find out how exactly the android and the Dual SIM logic actually works.

Highlight

The Motorola XT800 is the new device in Milestone family. The unique feature of the handset is the Dual SIM feature. But before you get too excited it does not support 2 GSM SIM cards. It supports one GSM and one CDMA SIM card . It comes with a decent capacitive touchscreen, a 5MP camera with dual LED flash , HDMI and runs on Android 2.1

Hardware / Design :

Motorola XT800 comes with a plastic body and a silver chrome running all over the sides of the phone. The phone comes with a reasonably large 3.7 inch screen with 480 x 854 pixels resolution.

There are 3 touch sensitive buttons below the screen- menu , home and back.

The volume controls and micro USB port are on the left side and HDMI port and camera button on the right.

The XT800 sports a 5 Megapixel auto focus camera with dual LEDs.

The battery cover has a nice pattern and makes gripping the handset very comfortable.

After removing the battery cover we can see the slots for two SIMs and a slot for memory card. The XT800 runs on Android 2.1 powered by 550Mhz TI OMAP3430 processor and 256MB RAM. The phone is powered by 1390 mAh Li-Ion battery.

User Interface / OS :

Motorola XT800 runs on Android 2.1 aka Eclair. The Android UI is mostly unaltered and there is no fancy skin except for the SIM selection overlay.

The settings app in Android comes with special settings for dual sim support where you can select the default data network. The Motorola XT800 comes with preinstalled apps such as QuickOffice, Firewall, Audio effects and Mysign.

The XT800 also comes with a special APN control widget with which you can toggle data transfer and also toggle between both CDMA and GSM data networks.

Firewall app:

The firewall app in XT800 serves as a spam filter for both calls and messages. The incoming call/sms filter monitors for spam calls and it ignores/rejects the call/sms as defined as the user. And when the outgoing call filter is enabled you can block all outgoing calls or allow calls to only certain numbers.

Camera :

XT800 comes with a 5MP auto focus cam with dualLED flash. The camera is quite ok and it comes with many predefined modes such as auto, portrait, landscape, sport, night portrait, sunset, macro and steady. Have a look at the camera samples below.

The video camera records videos at 720P with 25fps . The quality is pretty decent too .

One place where the UI is different is the music player. As you can see , the music controls are different.

It also comes with audio effects app with which you can change the audio output.

Conclusion :

Pros :

  • Dual SIM with CDMA and GSM support
  • Android 2.1
  • HDMI out
  • Firewall app
  • Loud audio output

Cons :

  • Slow Processor
  • Below par Battery Life
  • Expensive

The XT800 serves good as a Dual SIM Android phone but considering its expensive price tag we should have seen a bigger battery or a more powerful CPU. XT800 still runs on Android 2.1 still there is no news regarding its update. Full marks to Motorola for the attempt to bring a Smartphone with multiple SIM support but the price needs to be more attractive if it wants innovation to translate to sales.

BlackBerry has been airing some new ads about the Blackberry devices and Blackberry Messenger aka BBM. One commercial which really caught my attention was this ad showing a gal sharing her Blackberry PIN using a QR code on her bracelet. An excellent real life example of how to use QR codes right ?

The teenage crowd would totally enjoy this ! But sorry we don't know where are these girls with these hi-tech bracelets ;-) What do you think of this ad ? Vote Up or Down ?

Thanks to Omkarr for alerting me about the
