Last month we checked out the video for Mos Speedrun [$1.99], a new platformer from developer Physmos. Mos Speedrun looked unique with its emphasis on completing levels as quickly as possible, and for its use of the ghosts from previous failed attempts running along with you in the background. Today Mos Speedrun is finally available, and it's every bit as much fun as we'd hoped it would be.

Mos Speedrun contains 20 levels, each with 4 distinct goals to attain. There's simply completing the level, completing the level within the specified time goal, collecting every coin in the level, and searching out and collecting a hidden skull. The different goals are a great design decision, and give reason to play each level multiple times. You can leisurely explore a level collecting coins and looking for the hidden skull, but this also gives you a chance to familiarize yourself with its layout. Once you have a good feel for a level, you can easily go back on a different try and attempt the speed run with a better idea of what to expect.

The levels in Mos Speedrun are well designed, with all the usual trappings of a typical platform game. There's environmental hazards like laval pits and spikes as well as various enemy types which must be avoided. You can't kill enemies, and a single touch to an enemy or hazard will kill your little guy and end your current run. There's only movement and jumping to worry about, and in this way Mos Speedrun is platforming distilled to its purest form. There's even extensive underwater portions, which harken back to classic Sonic the Hedgehog levels where you must keep an eye on your oxygen meter and search out bubble areas to breathe from.

It's actually nice to have such an uncomplicated take on platforming, but it wouldn't mean anything if the controls didn't work. Thankfully, the controls in Mos Speedrun are great. The default scheme is a quirky setup where you touch anywhere on the left side of the screen to move left, anywhere on the right side of the screen to move right, and touch them both together to jump. I can see the value of this particular control scheme, as with some practice it would likely offer you quicker reaction times than standard virtual controls. Personally, though, I just could not wrap my head around it.

My much preferred control scheme is a simple virtual button setup, with left and right arrows for movement and a single button for jumping. This scheme works great, and approaches the tightness and responsiveness of the current King of platformer virtual controls League of Evil [99/Lite]. My one small criticism is that I feel the area around the jump button could be enlarged, as I occasionally will fat-thumb it and miss the button altogether, but it's not really a huge issue.

The only other negative I can think of forMos Speedrun is that there just isn't enough of it. The first half of the game won't take long to breeze through, including earning every goal for each level. The second half of the game ramps up quite a bit in difficulty though, and while you'll likely be able to at least complete each level doing so within the required time limit will be a real challenge. Still, I can't help but wish for more levels, and the developer has confirmed that more are on the way in future updates. There's also the ability to unlock special levels by visiting certain links through the Safari browser on your device, but I haven't had a chance to try out this feature yet.

Another point about Mos Speedrun is that while the ghost aspect is a neat idea, I didn't really feel like it added anything to the game and in fact found them to be distracting most of the time. They can be turned off, but I'd like to see options for seeing just the ghost for your current best run or maybe even a single previous attempt rather than all of them at once. Some players in our forums really seem to enjoy the ghost aspect though, so your mileage may vary with this particular feature.

Mos Speedrun is definitely another solid entry in the iOS platforming genre. The levels are interesting, the controls are spot on, and the game uses adorable pixel art graphics and an awesome chiptune soundtrack. Plus, despite not having a huge number of levels, the ones that are there will put up a good fight and are a joy to play through. If you've found yourself enjoying the many other platforming games in the App Store, and you're intrigued by the speed run aspect and the retro style of this title, then don't hesitate to give Mos Speedrun a try.

Available for $150, the Radeon HD 6790 is AMD's answer to NVIDIA's GTX460 and here are some of its specifications; 1024MB GDDR5 memory frequency, 840MHz GPU and 800 stream processors.

What AMD is trying to achieve is a more powerful device than the HD 5770 card but not so much as the HD 6850.

Predictably, its performance offers no threat to AMD's single-GPU flagship, but the 6790's 840MHz graphics and shader clock speeds plus 1GB of GDDR5 running at an effective 4.2GHz data rate don't seem like anything to sniff at either.

The new AMD Radeon HD 6790 is a recommended worthy conisderation as an excellent card for keen gamers that want to play in full 1080p high definition, but its also for home entertainment fans too.

You know Pocket God [$.99], right? On the smaller Apple handhelds, it's a game defined by the updates it has and still receives on a frequent basis. That tradition is continuing on in the iPad version [$4.99], as the next update is poised to add yet another mini-game set on a brand new planet to explore, Mercury, "a highly technological world where the civilization is obsessed with all things fast."

So, what's the game? Great. Glad you asked. It's called "Hover Jump," and Bolt tells us it's something like a take on Data East's Bump and Jump. In Hover Jump, you'll control a hover car-equipped pygmy tasked with navigating a "treacherous" road full of jumps and enemies. Jumping on enemies or over gaps eliminates threat, but the action also tasks your fuel. The not-so-subtle idea here is the push-and-pull of conservation versus action.

The update should be out very soon, if it isn't already. If it's not showing as an available update to you, check back later as the update finishes propagating across the world.

Scientists are discovering all sorts of amazing things that make our lives easier every day. Since preservation of energy is one major concern in this century, scientist have found a way to create electricity from water in a more efficient manner.

One MIT chemistry and engineering researcher, Daniel Nocera has found a way to create electricity from water in a more efficient manner than conventional solar cells. According to the results, it seems that this method can provide enough electric power for a whole house for an entire day from just one and a half bottles of wastewater.

This method of creating electric power from water is inspired by plants and photosynthesis process, and thanks to it, Daniel Nocera managed to create an artificial "leaf" that uses cobalt and phosphate to split water molecules. After splitting comes the process in which oxygen and hydrogen recombine creating electricity, that is on a higher level than conventional electricity produced with solar cells.

This is an amazing discovery, and we can't wait until scientist have perfect it so we can use it in everyday life.

Microsoft is working hard on its new operating system, and it is sending the test versions of Windows 8 to the PC manufacturers. We have got an opportunity to have a look at its new and improved user interface.

It looks like Microsoft is determined to replace the standard toolbars with Windows 8, and it seems Ribbon will replace the toolbars that have been a part of Windows Explorer for decades. Ribbon has been introduced with Office 2007 and 2010, and we can even see it in Windows 7 applications such as Wordpad and Paint. As you know, Ribbon put a great number of menu options and put them into fluid and dynamic menu bar, which is perfect for all tablet users. So far, we don't know whether users have an option to switch back to the standard interface.

Ribbon interface is a welcome change to the Windows 8 user interface, but it will take some time for users to adjust to it, so it's a risky addition that might do more harm than good.

It's been a rather rainy day today here in Austria, but since the weather has cleared up a bit, i was out and about with the Nokia N8 before. Spring has finally arrived and with it some buds on the tree right in front of the company I'm working at. If you know me, you know my love for the Nokia N8. Symbian

xperia play gaming

The highly anticipated Xperia Play otherwise known as the mythical 'PlayStation Phone' is finally with us, and despite Sony Ericsson's insistence that it should be judged as a smartphone first and foremost, we're willing to bet that the gadget-hungry general public are more interested in how it holds up as a mobile gaming platform.

xperia play gaming

With that in mind we've put this 'PlayStation Certified' Android handset through its paces over the last week and our conclusions are below, but the general impression is incredibly positive. Apple's iPhone may have spearheaded a touch-screen revolution in the mobile phone gaming arena, but the Xperia Play proves conclusively that there's still a place for proper buttons.

The Controls

The Controls

Although Sony Ericsson decided against plastering the iconic PlayStation logo on the exterior of the phone, when you slide open the Xperia Play's gaming interface you can't help but think of the PSPgo, the revised edition of the popular PlayStation Portable handheld that was launched by Sony in 2009.

The Controls
The layout is incredibly similar, and for gamers that's most definitely a positive thing. The recessed D-pad and buttons don't have much travel, but they're highly responsive and emit a satisfying 'click' when pressed.

The Controls
The PlayStation's famous dual shock analogue sticks are imitated by the twin touch-sensitive pads that sit neatly in the middle of this control configuration. Seasoned gamers may find the lack of physical feedback problematic, but the small dip in the middle of each pad serves as an excellent reference point, and saves you from having to glance down to check where the pads are in relation to your fingers.

The Controls

What we have here is an almost perfect physical gaming interface, with only the flimsy shoulder triggers proving to be a disappointment. They're awkwardly placed and feel so delicate you almost become scared to push them with too much gusto.

The Controls

The Games

Because it's based on Google's world-beating Android OS, the Xperia Play benefits from connectivity with the Android Market, which is well-stocked with all kinds of games. Most of these titles don't make use of the Xperia Play's physical controls, but since the launch of the phone 60 games have become 'Xperia Optimised' and you can expect that number to increase very quickly.

The Controls

The handset comes pre-loaded with a neat selection of games, including the FIFA 2010, Star Battalion and the brilliant-looking Bruce Lee: Dragon Warrior. Other games such as Asphalt 6, Cordy and Battle Bears are just a download away. If you're already a dedicated Android gamer then you may find that some of your previously-purchased titles have been updated with support for Sony Ericsson's new phone.

The Controls

As well as Android games, the Xperia Play also comes with the ability to play 32-bit PlayStation titles via the PlayStation Pocket application. Naughty Dog's Crash Bandicoot comes pre-installed, and a handful of other games are available. The selection is slightly underwhelming at the moment, but once some of Sony's biggest franchises become available it's going to be a lot more appealing.

It's also worth noting how well the Xperia Play functions with the flood of retro gaming emulators currently available on the Android Market. 16-bit machines such as the Nintendo SNES, Sega Mega Drive and Commodore Amiga are all replicated perfectly, and when twinned with the Xperia Play's excellent controls, these emulators really spring to life.

The Verdict

Many critics have been rather scathing of the Xperia Play's smartphone credentials, citing underpowered hardware, a washed-out screen and a rather ugly case design as the reasons for their negative stance. However, as a gaming system the phone is a complete success. It offers both touch-screen and physical controls, meaning that it's just as happy playing finger-friendly fare such as Angry Birds as it is playing twin-stick FPS blaster Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus.

The Controls

While Apple's iPhone has the advantage in terms of games at present, if Android's continued growth is anything to go by that situation may begin to change, and the Xperia Play is the ideal handset to benefit from such a shift in power. If you consider yourself to be a serious mobile gamer, then it's well worth considering.

Burglary is a common problem nowadays, and if you don't want to spend money on expensive alarm system, there's a special app that turns your Mac into a security camera.

It's quite simple actually, you just need a Mac and an iPad or iPhone and the Witness app, and you can turn your Mac into a security system. This app is great since you can activate the security remotely from your iPhone or iPad, but the downside of this system is that you have to keep your Mac turned on and have available internet connection at all times. Anyhow, Witness works great, it will send you pictures and videos directly to your iPhone or iPad in case anything moves in front of your Mac. However, although Witness sounds like a good alternative to expensive alarm systems, nothing keeps the burglar from taking your Mac as well.

If you want to try this app out, you can get it free for your iOS, but you'll have to pay $40 for the Mac application.

Mobigame's Perfect Cell [99/Lite] was one of my surprise favorites from the onslaught of incredible holiday releases last year. It has you playing a squid-like alien who is captured following a crash landing on Earth and held captive in a research facility deep below the ocean. Obviously, Mr. Alien doesn't take to kindly to being locked up, and quickly breaks from captivity and searches the facility for a way out. Along the way he'll find his two alien buddies which he can fuse together with to become stronger and gain extra abilities, or split apart from to solve some of the environmental puzzles in the game.

Perfect Cell is especially cool because of the different ways you can approach completing it. You can go on a murderous rampage, destroying every soldier or scientist you come across on your way out (which is pretty much the attitude they have towards you too, by the way). Or, you can take the stealth route and try to use your cloaking ability and the many passageways hidden throughout the cleverly designed levels in order to never be seen at all. There's even special achievements for not killing anybody, which is much easier said than done.

We gave a hearty recommendation to Perfect Cell when we reviewed it last December at its original price of $6, but starting today you can grab the game for just 99 for a limited time. At that price it really is a no brainer, but just to be sure you can check out the lite version and try out the game yourself first. Perfect Cell is an interesting blend of platforming, puzzle elements, exploration, and either slicing up every person you see with gruesome attacks or trying your darndest to avoid them. Definitely check out the lite version of Perfect Cell, and if you're digging it then don't hesitate to grab the full game during this 99 sale.
