While I'm not the retro overlord our own Blake Patterson is, I've always thought it would be super cool to have a cocktail arcade machine. Even though the iPad doesn't have the 30 years worth of pizza grease on it like your typical Pac-Man cocktail table would have, the iPad is a surprisingly good substitute when it comes to face to face single device multiplayer. Where am I going with all this? Well, Super Cosmic Word Snake [$2.99] combines so many things I like in an iPad game it's almost like 3V Games built their game off some design document of mine that I haven't even created yet. It's dripping with retro charm, has simple (but incredibly fun) two player single device multiplayer, and even has Game Center.

To start playing, you need to situate the iPad between you and a friend and flip a coin (or somehow determine) who is going to play which side first. As the first player, you're responsible for growing the super cosmic word snake as much as possible. Adding body segments on to the end of said snake is as simple as hitting the 7 letter buttons at the bottom of the screen to make a word. The first letter of the word you form must start with the last letter of the worm itself. The snake then, well, snakes around the screen towards the opposite side.

Player 2 plays on the opposite side of the screen, and using a slider and a button you're able to fire at the word snake. Initially you'll need to shoot asteroids out of the way to get a clear shot, but after that you're home free to unload everything you've got on to the snake. Segments of the snake come in two types, and can be killed in one shot if those segments were added by a three (or less) letter word. Segments added from a four (or more) letter word take two shots to kill.

The game is over when the worm has either been destroyed, or it has made it all the way to the other side. After that, it starts over, and it's up to you whether or not you switch places. There's also a single player mode included as well, although it's substantially less fun than playing with another person. In fact, if you don't have someone to play with, I'd go as far as just suggesting sticking with more typical single player oriented word games.

I really like how retro-ized the whole game is, and how the graphics and interface are designed to look just like a cocktail table arcade machine. It's also neat how the two players play the game so differently, with one player playing what amounts to a retro-style shooter while the other plays a word game. It would be cool to have some additional game modes, or power-ups of sorts that could keep things a little more even if one player was particularly good at their goal, but overall Super Cosmic Word Snake is a surprisingly fun two player iPad game.

The production of the Apple iPhone 5 should start in September according to a note held by Avian Securities today.

Additionally it was said that even if the iPhone 5 was announced in June or July, it might not hit the market until late this year or early next year. They also hinted that the cheaper/ lower spec'd iPhone that was the topic of rumours over the past few months might very well be real.

The information was gathered from coversations held with a key component supplier for Apple.

Heads up, Potter fans: LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1 4 [$2.99] for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch is now just $2.99 on the App Store, coming down from a high of $4.99. Movie tie-in games, in general, stink, so it's nice to be able to point you in the direction of this fantastic joint, which has a touch of LEGO game whimsy, some serious HP love, and competent bolts and bits of hardcore design. You can read our full review here, but the gist is this: even if you're not crawling into bed with a Rowling novel every night, there's still a lot fun to be had with this third-person action / exploration / adventure game.

Also, on the update front, you'll notice that version 2.2 has been pushed out this is a patch that addresses that nasty red brick glitch that prevented people from accessing their crimson unlockables. Of course, this version of the game also supports Retina display, is universal, and features the same content as its console counterpart which sells for many times more. Pretty sharp package for a low price.

We've been shoveling heaps of praise on Death Rally [$2.99] lately between our glowing review and the announcement of the recent update. Well, the update is out now and along with it comes a price drop to $2.99. I've still got my fingers (and toes) crossed for some kind of online multiplayer eventually, but a new car, new weapons, and the new game mode included in this update is a great start.

Death Rally is a remake of the classic topdown racer with the same title. Made by Remedy, the creators of Max Payne and Alan Wake, on top of being universal Death Rally is also one of the few games out there right now that is fully optimized for the iPad 2. With a steady stream of updates on the way, one already dropped, and a recent sale, there's really no reason to not grab this game.

The much pronounced Facebook Phone form INQ, INQ Cloud Touch, is finally released and is now available for $489. This cool facebook Phone was rumored back in February 2011 and is now finally launched.

As the name suggests, it is basically a smartphone made for Facebook lovers. It has lots of exciting features relating to Facebook. The INQ Cloud Touch runs on Android 2.2, packs a 3.5-inch 480320 display, an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor, a five MP camera, FM radio, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth.

The homescreen shows all of Facebook's newsfeeds from your profile. It also lets you access many other Facebook features like Facebook Chat, Places, Facebook Messages, Notifications, etc. All this can be easily accessed with a tap. You can also sync your Facebook events with Google Calendar, which is pretty neat.

After HTC released its ChaCha and Salsa Facebook phones (not very successfully), INQ Cloud Touch is the second pure Facebook phone to arrive the market. We'll keep a close eye and see what sort of ratings it'll receive.

Welcome to our interview series here on Fone Arena, something we wanted to do for quite some time now. We invite you to (virtually) meet the team working behind the scenes, we invite you to meet the Fone Arena Team! Each week I will conduct a new interview with one of our authors, in which you'll get to know us a bit better.

This week I'd like you to meet Jon Choo from the UK. I've had the pleasure to meet Jon at the Ovi "good things" trip, and then again at Nokia World last year in London. A true tech enthusiast and very nice guy, enjoy his interview!

Who are you? Introduce yourself!

Hi, I am Jon Choo. I grew up in Malaysia but spent all my adult life in Britain. I currently live near London. I enjoy fell walking, watching films, video gaming, camping, photography, attending live music, socialising and doing cool stuff like flash mobs. I am also a twitter addict you can find me on @jonchoo

Tell us a little bit about your "mobile career". What did you do prior to Fone Arena?

Prior to joining Fone Arena, I ran my own blog (jonchoo.blogspot.com). In fact I still do. I started blogging about technology and video games in general since 2003 Palm OS and Pocket PC were my main interests back then. I've also contributed towww.palminfocenter.com in the past. Before that I hung around various IRC channels and forums relating to Palm OS.

I have always been fascinated by mobile technology all the way from my first phone, a Motorola StarTac 75; first PDA, a Palm Vx; and finally to my first smartphone, the HTC Magician.

Which Device(s) do you currently use?

As far as phones goes I currently use a Nokia N8 and a Motorola Milestone 2, which I recently reviewed here on Fona Arena. I currently use a ThinkPad X61 (looking into getting a ThinkPad X220 in the future) as my main and only computer, and shoot with a Nikon D90 and Canon S90. In addition to those I also have a PS3, PSP, Wii and DS Lite. Finally I also have a Three MiFi (Huawei E585) mobile wireless router.

Your favourite OS at the moment?

I have none. I still use Symbian out of habit, and because I've made several investments in applications. I would move to Android but have never warmed to the UI. I have high hopes for Windows Phone 7 the UX is there, Microsoft just need to get those missing features for power users. Hopefully this is an area Nokia can help.

What was the coolest thing that ever happened to you, involving mobile phones?

Getting to attend events and meeting influential people. Some of these people are no longer 'contacts' as I consider them as friends. But if I have to name one, it was Conspiracy for Good (http://www.conspiracyforgood.com), held in London during the summer of 2010. The augmented reality gaming (ARG) event combined two of my favourite subjects mobile technology and gaming into a form of offline and online interactive story telling. Getting to hang out with Tim Kring, the creator of Heroes, was also pretty memorable.

I also enjoyed the entire week of Nokia World 2010. The entire week was mental, from the pre Nokia World meetup in London, the VIP party, watching Tim Berners-Lee's rousing speech on stage, shaking Stephen Elop's hand to witnessing HTC 'gate-crashing' Nokia World (and vice versa).

Where do you see mobile phones in the future?

In the future there would be no mobile phones. Everything will be connected rendering the concept of a traditional mobile phone/smartphone irrelevant.

As for the immediate future, manufacturers will increasingly try to out-spec each other with features like projectors and 3D displays we do not need. We are already seeing that happen. There is a reason why I am not rushing to reach my wallet for any of the new phones announced recently at MWC.

And last but not least, how would your dream device look like?

This is a tough question, if only because my dream device would be based on current technology limitation. In terms of design I would like to see Nokia work on their Nokia Aeon concept.

At this point in life, I just want something that delivers a great user experience, be always connected so I can be in touch with people who matters to me and yet maintain a great battery life. There is far too much emphasis on raw specs and features we do not need and solutions to problems we do not have. But who knows what the future will bring? A fully functional Tricorder perhaps? :D

Google has been planning a way to monetize YouTube for a while, it seems like that next step is going to put that plan in motion soon we might see premium channels on YouTube.

According to the sources, Google is planning to create about 20 premium channels that will have five to ten hours of original programming. It seems that Google is quite serious about this one, since it is planning to invest $100 million for this original content.

Although it appears that Google is quite determined in its intention, we still don't know when we'll see this improvement and how much will these premium channels cost, nor what kind of content will be available to viewer. We can't shake the feeling that Google is trying to compete with Netflix, but with 20 premium channels we doubt that YouTube will make much impact on Netflix's users.

YouTube might become a TV network someday, we're looking forward to see premium channels and content, but we doubt many YouTube users will pay for it hence Google's struggle to make YouTube profitable looks to continue.

Ever since the introduction of the Unreal Engine on iOS, the graphical capabilities of games have exceeded anything I would have previously thought possible on the platform, as most notoriously evidenced by Epic and Chair Entertainment's Infinity Blade [$5.99]. A new video for the upcoming game Dream:scape has similarly grabbed my attention with its gorgeous visuals and promise of expansive game world.

Not much is really known about Dream:scape, other than it's built using the Unreal Engine and is said to contain more than 30 acres of in-game explorable landscape and building interiors. It's described as an "interactive storytelling experience", and it looks to be more along the lines of an adventure game rendered in 3D rather than a more traditional role-playing game. The developer offers a bit more information in a comment on his YouTube channel:

The player takes on the persona of a coma patient unlocking his past by exploring the dreamscape of his memories. As the player explores the huge open world, memories are unlocked. These are represented by cut-scenes, featuring audible dialog, and diary entries, which the player reads in-game via a 3-D representation of a leather-bound book. The player must determine which areas to explore so as to find and? unlock the story.

Dream:scape is currently in review with Apple, and barring any sort of complications should be released soon. In regards to whether it will run on older devices or not, the developer notes that it's built on the same Unreal Mobile engine as Infinity Blade, so how that game performs on your particular device may be an indication of how well Dream:scape will run, though no official device support has been finalized. There's currently a discussion thread for Dream:scape in our forums, and we'll hopefully have more from this intriguing title in the coming weeks.

After Google's problems with China, the search engine giant is once again having problems but this time with another country Italy.

Autocomplete feature has proven to be quite useful over the years, but it seems that some people don't agree. For example, it seems that the Italian government is having issues with this feature, therefore they have requested from Google to filer certain search results.

It appears that Italian government doesn't welcome certain suggestions that appear while searching for a specific public figure. Some of those suggestions include words such as fraud and similar, the Italian government requested the removal of those suggestions from autocomplete feature.

At first, Google refused to do this, saying that these suggestions are generated by an algorithm, but eventually, Google had to remove those suggestions from autocomplete since it lost its case against the Italian government.

We're not positive that this type of censorship is a good thing, and we have to ask ourselves, will Google be censored even more in the future?

As I'm sure many of you have gathered already by the lovely border currently adorning our site, CAVE is running a sale on all 3 of their iOS games for a limited time. Due to the fact that CAVE has never had sales on their games aside from when they are released, and given the sheer quality of each of these titles, it's definitely worth highlighting this sale some more. This comes as a celebration for the 1 year anniversary of CAVE World, the division of CAVE responsible for iOS development. Take a look at the description and videos for each of these titles and see what strikes your fancy. Also, each game features full Game Center integration with leaderboards and achievements and there's lite versions to try for all of them.

Espgaluda II, $8.99?$4.99 CAVE's very first iOS offering was a port of their 2005 arcade and Xbox 360 game Espgaluda II. It featured all of the same screen filling bullet hell action of those versions but also included a special iPhone mode that was designed with mobile play in mind. The scoring in iPhone mode is tweaked slightly to be less confusing, and their is also a special Awakening Pulse attack exclusive to the iOS version.

CAVE did a wonderful job including options for different screen sizes, control schemes, and difficulty levels in an effort to cater to as wide an audience as possible. In many ways, Espgaluda II actually feels best with touch screen controls as opposed to traditional control sticks or d-pads. We really liked Espgaluda II in our review, and even 1 year later it stands as one of the best shooters available on the App Store, and there's a whole thread of people in our forums with similar sentiments.

App Store Links:

Dodonpachi Resurrection, $8.99 ? $4.99 The follow-up to Espgaluda II was a port of CAVE's 2008 arcade game Dodonpachi DaiFukkatsu (renamed Dodonpachi Resurrection for iOS). This release was significant in that the iOS platform received this port before any other platform, signifying CAVE's strong support of App Store gaming. On top of that, it's just an excellent game, and featured both an arcade mode and new iPhone mode similar to that of Espgaluda II.

This time, however, the iPhone-specific enhancements went even further. A brilliant brand new dual-meter scoring system complimented the new Hyper Cannon weapon which utilized the touch screen in a unique way. These points are covered in more detail in our review of the game from last August, and earlier this year we learned about the alternate routes you could take through the game to unlock a hidden playable boss ship. As far as shooters go, they don't get much better than Dodonpachi Resurrection, as evidenced by the many positive comments in our forums.

App Store Links:

Mushihimesama Bug Panic, $4.99 ? 99 Not long after the release of Dodonpachi Resurrection, CAVE announced that they were working on an original title for iOS using characters from their Mushihimesama series. Titled Mushihimesama Bug Panic, it was a departure from CAVE's typical scrolling shooters and was instead a dual-stick style shooter featuring elements of bullet hell gameplay.Much in the same way Dodonpachi Resurrection and Espgaluda II represented high water marks for the shooter genre on iOS, Mushihimesama Bug Panic offered one of the best dual-stick experiences available on the App Store.

Besides the single player campaign with many levels to play through each with hidden areas, collectibles, dozens of enemies and huge boss characters Mushihimesama Bug Panic was also recently updated with full online multiplayer through Game Center. We really loved Mushihimesama Bug Panic in our review, and once again players have really been enjoying this latest CAVE title in our forums. As an added bonus all proceeds from the Mushihimesama Bug Panic sale will be donated to Red Cross relief efforts in Japan.

App Store Links:

The sale on all of CAVE's titles started this past Saturday and will run until next Sunday, April 17th. There are lite versions of every game available to try out before you buy, but keep in mind that all games require at least a 3rd generation iPhone/iPod touch or an iPad due to the massive amount of sprites that they push at any given time. Also, just in case you can't get enough of CAVE on your device, you can grab their free kitchen timer app Mushihimesama Bug Timer [Free] which I have found an invaluable tool for manic egg boiling.

All of CAVE's titles are worth checking out and grabbing during this rare sale, and with their recently announced Deathsmiles port on the horizon we can all look forward to more CAVE goodness on the App Store soon.

Nokia Drop which is an experimental app from Nokia Beta labs lets you push images and links from your PC to your phone with a single click. This app is similar to Chrome to Phone app for Android devices.

This requires data connection on your phone but doesn't need Wi-Fi or 3G. This is better than Chrome to Phone app on Android, which requires Dropbox account, but Nokia drop uses your OVI account to connect between the browser extension and phone app.

  • Send links from browser to your phone with a single click.
  • Send images to your phone in single click.
  • Set as wallpaper option lets you send the image to your phone sets it as wallpaper.
  • View recent activity both on desktop extension and the phone app.

Here is a video from Nokia Beta labs explaining how the app works

This supports Firefox and Chrome browsers. The browser extensions and the phone app could be downloaded from Nokia Beta labs for Symbian

If you thought that Sony is the only company thats having problems with hackers, guess again. It seems that Microsoft and Xbox Live have similar problem as well.

Hackers over the world are getting tired from constant banning, so they have chosen to take action, or at least one of them. A hacker that goes by the name of The Predator apparently had enough harassment from Xbox Live personnel, after being banned 35 times, The Predator decided to have revenge on the person that got him banned in the first place, and so the user Stephen "Stepto" Toulouse became the victim.

For those of you who don't know, Stephen "Stepto" Toulouse is Director of Policy ad Enforcement for Xbox Live and he's in charge of banning hackers. After he banned The Predator 35 times, The Predator decided it's time for revenge so he hacked Stepto's account so he could teach him a lesson. Of course, this incident has been taken care of and Stepto got his account back in no time.

If a person such as Stepto can get his account hacked, how safe are our accounts on Xbox Live?
