China has been known to develop alternatives to almost every gadget in existance in this tech world and that too always at a cheaper rate. Recently it came out with its own DVD like standard and now China will sell its own CPU design.

Although it will take up to 20 years for Chinese developers to get up to scratch with top giants like Intel and AMD. The new CPU developed by them is called Loongson (meaning GodSon) and it is set to power a Chinese supercomputer, 'the Dawning 6000'.

Its rally is a great challenge to China, to prove itself.

Within a 20-year span, anything can happen, and the fact that a relatively small company like AMD can fight Intel effectively shows that with the right people (and an X86 license), it's possible.

But China needs a truly efficient design, because if people are "forced" to use a homegrown design for the sake of national pride, that will lead to nothing but a loss in competitiveness (for themselves), and that's a slippery path. That said, China "produces" 500,000 engineers a year, so the rest of the world probably should take this very seriously.

We're just one day away from the iPad 2 launch, as every schoolchild knows, but early reviews of the unit have already begun to appear, and they all indicate that the iPad 2 is notably faster than its predecessor. No surprise there, given Apple's claims that the iPad 2 features "up to 2x faster CPU" and "up to 9x faster graphics," as compared to the original iPad.

But, how fast is it, really?

As gamers, we're quite anxious to see just how well Apple's new tablet can push the pixels and polygons with its A5 processor. This new system-on-a-chip features 512MB of RAM, two (dynamic-stepping) 1GHz CPU cores ARM Cortex A9-based and a new graphics subsystem, whichalmost certainly utilizes at least one Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX543 core, the same GPU used in Sony's upcoming NGP (in quad-core GPU configuration).

Until game developers widely get their hands on the new device, we can only look to early benchmarks taken on the few press evaluation units Apple has provided to key media, in order to try and glean a feel for the iPad 2's performance as a game platform. Happily, developers will be able to grab their iPad 2 just over 24 hours from now, but as those are going to be a long and painful 24 hours, let's take a look at some benchmark data.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball has posted one of the aforementioned iPad 2 reviews, in which he shares his reactions to the device as well as some benchmark numbers. And, Gruber's suite of benchmarks is a little more interesting than most that we've seen so far.

He posts the results of the Sunspider JavaScript benchmark that everybody with an iPad 2 has been running, for both the iPad and iPad 2, showing the latter to come out on top due both to improved hardware and, more directly, iOS 4.3's bundling of Apple's Nitro JavaScript engine into the iOS 4.3 version of Mobile Safari. He posts Geekbench results, as well, which show the iPad 2 performing 159% faster than the original iPad, overall. But, what's rather more interesting are the results of a benchmark custom-coded by Guy English of Kickingbear (who did some work on Tap Tap Revenge), written to measure specifically the graphics capabilities of the iPad 2, from a developer's perspective.

The custom benchmark in question renders thousands of sprites moving about the screen, with gravity, while tracking up to three touch points. The results show the iPad 2's graphics improvements to go well beyond simply those of the dual-core CPU.

For example, on my original iPad, with 200 on-screen sprites, the framerate dropped to 45 fps. On the iPad 2, with 400 on-screen sprites, the framerate remained at 65 fps. On the iPad 1, Guy's demo app dropped below 60 fps with about 100 animated sprites; on the iPad 2, it didn't drop below 60 fps until there were over 750 animated sprites.

After I showed him the results, Guy told me, "The results show that the iPad 2 is easily about twice as powerful as the original and that this speed gain is a freebie you don't need to change your code structure in order to see significant gains. The differences in the amount of time spent rendering indicates that the GPU is really much faster than the original."

English indicates that the original iPad has a comparatively weak fill-rate and that the new device's much more powerful graphics subsystem should allow for some really incredible visuals in games and applications written (or updated) to take advantage of the native hardware.

"Up to 9x faster graphics"? Based on what these benchmarks are showing, it doesn't seem that Apple's claim is too wide of the mark. And, I'm guessing that there's more than one PowerVR core in that A5. (I tried, but was unable to squeeze any clarifying info out of the Imagination Technologies folks on the GDC expo floor.) We'll find out soon enough. But, whatever the case, it's clear that the iPad 2 is going to be an iOS gaming powerhouse.Developers, your work is cut out for you.

Back in 1996, way before Max Payne and way, way, way before Alan Wake, developer Remedy Entertainment released a top-down racer called Death Rally for DOS. It was neat for its time. You played as one of several cars in a series of bullet-spewing rallies. The end goal was the finish line, but it didn't matter if you demolished all your foes before they whiffed the checkered flag. Plus, there was a deep upgrade system that kept you re-tooling your base cars for more attack possibilities.

As you may have guessed by now, Death Rally is being re-released for iOS. It'll land at some point this month and appears to have about it a certain mix of reverence and new age to make it fun to play in 2011. At least, that's the impression I walked away with after seeing a brief demo of the title at GDC 2011.

As the screenshots above show, the game's undergone a huge makeover since its DOS days, bringing crisp, clean visuals which, awesomely enough, are married to what appears to be a solid racing title. I use that modifier because I'm not quite sure what I think of it yet I was repeatedly told that levels were still being tooled and the game still needed balance testing.

One thing for sure, though, is that the weapons and effects are wicked cool. Also, expect to see some awesome cameos. I was told Duke Nukem will be one of your opponents and Barry Wheeler of the Alan Wake fame is definitely in the game, too.

This'll be an interesting release and, really, I can't wait to get my hands on it to give you a much better indication of what the game has to offer and who it might appeal to. Until then, though, look at the pretty screens!

The images and specs of the unannounced Nokia E6-00 have been leaked. It appears to be an updated version of the Nokia E71. The E6-00's launch at the Mobile World Congress 2011 is set to overshadow a number of other Nokia launches, including the X7-00 and the N9.

From the little information that could be extracted at that moment I could only conclude that we are dealing with an 8 MP camera with dual LED flash, front-facing videocall camera and runs Symbian

When Samsung released its Galaxy Tab last year, it was though to be the major competitor of Apple iPad. But now, after iPad 2 has been released, customers are unlikely to buy the Galaxy Tab which is still priced at the same rate. So Samsung has given it a new look, design & interface to its Galaxy Tab. They are planning to release Galaxy Tab 8.9 on the 22nd March in Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2011 event. Below is its teaser image that they have released.

This image gives an idea of the sleek design that the upcoming mid-sized Galaxy Tab 8.9 is supposed to have. For folks who think that the 7? was too small, and 10.1? is too big then the 8.9? tablet could be the perfect size. Although Samsung has not revealed the actual specs, it seems that it'll have a 3.5mm audio jack and a bumpy/rough surface for its back. It should provide a better grip.

Only a few days left for its release, we will keep you undated.

We've seen all sorts of DIY things, but none of those things was amazing as this gun. It appears that one person has managed to create a DIY laser gun, so let's check it out.

This device is called DIY Pulse Laser Gun, made by Patrick Priebe. According to the creator, this gun has a small pulse laser head that is capable of generating a kW-pulse of infrared coherent light. With such power, this gun can easily shoot through a razor blade, plastic and 5mm thick Styrofoam. As for the range, this device can hit any dark surfaces that are up to 3 meters of range. Just as range, firepower of this device isn't amazing, but it will leave a small 5mm hole behind everything. Size of the DIY Pulse Laser Gun is 320mm long and it weights two pounds.

As you can see, this gun is dangerous but not deadly, and it's definitely one of the most powerful DIY devices that we've seen in a while.

One game that I have really been looking forward to ever since it was revealed in early February is Kami Retro [$1.99] from Gamevil and Paw Print Games. We had a chance to get some hands on time with Kami Retro last week at GDC, and today the game has officially launched in the App Store.

Kami Retro is a puzzle platforming game that draws influence from several similar games before it, like Jet Set Willy, Rainbow Islands, Super Mario Bros. and Lemmings. In each of the 65 single screen levels, you must get several Kamis from an entrance at one point in the level safely to the exit at another. You'll use various items like springboards, fans, and cannons which need to be placed at specific points in order to accomplish this.

Kamis will automatically move, and a simple swipe gesture is used to make them jump when needed, which sounds a bit suspect but actually works well in practice. The game gets hectic as just when you are getting one Kami into the exit, another is popping out of the entrance which you must then quickly bring your attention to before they go and get themselves killed.

I've only spent a brief amount of time with Kami Retro, but so far my impressions are good. The levels are cleverly designed and require subtle precision in how you place objects in order to be successful. The art style is absolutely fantastic, with blocky pixel graphics that are rendered in 3D. Each level is full of color and the animations bring everything to life. There are more impressions from gamers in our forums, and if you like retro-inspired visuals and puzzle-platforming gameplay then Kami Retro is definitely one to check out.

Firemint has just temporarily dropped the price on the iPad version of their highly popular, feature-filled chaos management title Flight Control. For just 24 hours, Flight Control HD [App Store] will be available at an 80% discount for $0.99, down from its regular price of $4.99.

For those somehow unfamiliar, Flight Control turns you into an air traffic controller, routing helicopters and airplanes of various sizes and speeds into the proper (color coded) airports hopefully without incident. It's game that should handily dispel any aspirations you have to become a real-life air traffic controller.

Flight Control has been extremely well maintained since its release and now features leaderboards, achievements and online multiplayer via Game Center, local WiFi / Bluetooth multiplayer and, specific to the iPad version, shared (same device) multiplayer, both cooperative and competitive.

Flight Control brings a great balance of easy pick-up gameplay, ramping difficulty and that "just one more time" draw. If your iPad lacks Flight Control HD, now's the time to take care of that.

Last week at GDC 2011 I sat down with developer Booyah! to take a look at their new game DJ Rivals [Free]. In the game you will create your own DJ and cruise around a city battling rival DJ's using rhythm-based gameplay mechanics. You can choose any real city in the world which will use Google Maps information to populate it with real locations, and as you win DJ battles you'll earn experience and money which can then be used to level up your character and buy a ton of different items to trick him or her out with.

I quite enjoyed DJ Rivals when I previewed it, and today the game has launched for free in the App Store. There is a story mode to play through with 4 different chapters and dozens of different kinds of quests to complete. You can also obtain "house DJ" status at the various locations by performing well, and then battle the ghost characters of other real life players to either defend your house DJ status or take theirs from them.

DJ Rivals is a freemium title, and as such there is an IAP component called "ice" in addition to the regular currency in the game. I've only spent a short time playing so far, but for the most part it appears that you get a good chunk of playtime without ever having to spend a dime if you don't want to, but you'll need to have a lot of patience.

Ice can be earned just through playing and so is not strictly IAP, but battling other DJ's costs stamina points and you'll either need to spend ice to instantly refill it or else wait for it to slowly refill over a cool down period of 10 minutes per stamina point. This can considerably slow down the pace of the game, but I can't imagine playing so often that it would be a problem and I wouldn't be opposed to spending a couple of dollars here and there if I was anxious to keep going.

DJ Rivals is free to download and try, and if a rhythm-based game with RPG-esque elements sounds interesting to you then it's worth checking out. The rhythm battling is pretty fun, and there's loads of things to collect and do in the game. And at the very least it's a more fun and interesting freemium title than your average farming sim.
