Spotify says hello to the iPod

May 4th, 2011

At Spotify it's always been our mission to provide you with the best all-round music experience on the planet. For Spotify Premium subscribers, a huge part of that experience is taking your playlists with you wherever you go. However, for the rest of our users, listening to their favourite playlists on the move hasn't been possible.

You've been telling us how much you love discovering, sharing and talking about music in Spotify and you've created well over 200 million playlists to prove it. But you've also said you're listening to a huge amount of music on your iPods, and that getting your Spotify playlists onto them as MP3s has been a serious hassle, forcing you to juggle multiple music players. That's until now…

As of today, Spotify is making it possible for everyone to take their playlists with them in one lean, green music machine.

New features include:

Manage your iPod in Spotify! For the first time, seamlessly manage any iPod classic, iPod nano and iPod shuffle in Spotify. Simply connect your iPod to your computer via your USB cable and watch it magically appear in the new 'Devices' section of your Spotify sidebar.
Sync all the MP3s contained in your Spotify playlists to your iPod, and purchase the rest through…

The all-new Spotify download service! Listening to the music you want to hear, wherever you want it, just got a whole lot simpler and cheaper.
Your playlists are special to you. You've spent untold hours putting together your own mix-tape masterpieces on your computer and want to take them with you, but without the trouble of having to buy each track separately, switching music players or breaking the bank? Then look no further.

Spotify's new MP3 download service makes it possible to own your playlists in one easy step. By introducing a range of MP3 bundles, we've been able to offer you some of the most competitive prices available from as little as 60 cents per song.

Spotify Mobile app now available to all! iPod integration was your biggest request, but there are also a lot of Spotify Free users out there who are iPhone and Android phone owners. You asked for the ability to buy your MP3 playlists and sync to your phones. So we've got you covered too…

As of today, everyone can download the Spotify Mobile iPhone & Android apps to wirelessly sync your MP3 playlists in Spotify from your computer to your phone. Fire up your mobile app and see your phone appear in the 'Devices' section of the Spotify sidebar, ready to rock and roll. No cables required! And did we mention it's now possible to wirelessly sync these playlists to your iPod touch?

Now everyone can own their favourite Spotify playlists to take wherever they want. Heading out for a run or off on a trip? Buying the songs you want to hear has never been quicker, easier or more affordable.

All new features will begin being rolled out to all users from today as part of an automatic update. Be sure to give us a spin!

Daniel Ek, CEO & Founder of Spotify, says: "From today, Spotify really is the only music player you'll ever need. Our users don't want to have to switch between music players, but they do want to take their playlists with them wherever they go, on a wider range of devices, more simply and at a price they can afford. Now we've made that possible on one of the world's most popular consumer devices."

Gustav Söderström, Chief Product Officer at Spotify, adds: "Accessing music on your mobile phone is the future, but today that makes up a pretty small percentage of music fans. We want to open up the Spotify experience to as many people as possible, and in a way where they can get exactly the music they want at a great price. Check it out we really hope you like it."

Apple has been launching new devices around June and July on a regular basis in recent years. However, there are increasing numbers of reports suggesting that the iPhone 5 may be released at Apple's traditional September iPod-focused event instead. This is because the World Wide Developers' Conference this year, to be held in June, Apple is focused on software, leaving observers believe that it's unlikely to see a new iPhone. MacRumor reports that one of their readers got new confirmation from a AT&T customer representative that "there will be no iPhone in June/July".

The disclosure came after the reader noticed that his eligibility date for a subsidized upgrade had been pushed back by over five months and contacted AT&T to inquire about the reason for the change. As part of a response outlining AT&T's criteria for determining upgrade eligibility dates, the agent reportedly offered the following statement as fact:

Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July time frame, though there will be a newer version in the future. Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us.

Apple just released its white iPhone 4 last week. It has been delayed for a long time since its original release date. We are uncertain whether the source of information is in fact reliable or not. However, given the current situation, the release of iPhone 5 may not be as previously expected.

We just entered the dual-core era of mobile phone with LG Optimus 2x, which is an amazing device and first one to feature Tegra 2 dual-core processor and not to forget Motorola XOOM which is first ever dual-core Android powered tablet. There was a time when a single-core 1 GHz processor feels like a bullet, but now it's all about dual-core. If the phone features all the best stuff but missing dual-core processor, then mostly people try to avoid it. If you are thinking that dual-core is the end, then you are thinking wrong. We told you a few months ago that Nvidia is working on world's first mobile quad-core processor. Quad-core will take the mobile experience to next level, with more power, more performance, and better graphics.

ASUS already working on a Tegra 3 quad-core tablet and an Intel Atom based tablet. DigiTimes is the source of this crispy news and they are saying that ASUS is working really hard. ASUS just entered the Android tablet market with their Eee Pad Transformer tablet, and it's currently known as one of the best Android tablets. We recently told you that it's sold out at BestBuy. Talking about the OS of the tablets, I think that either will be Android powered, or maybe one will features Microsoft Windows OS. It's expected that ASUS will launch these tablets later this year.

So folks, do you really want quad-core on your tablet and mobile?

We are all waiting for Windows 8 with anticipation, and with each leaked version of Windows 8, we find some new exciting features. Windows 8 build 7955 has been leaked, and according to reports, Windows 8 will introduce a new "Specify settings for optional component installation and repair of operating system corruption".

As you know, since the early ages of Windows, we were forced to install our Windows in a predefined folder on our hard drive. According to these reports, that will change thanks to this new feature that allows you to choose the directory in which you want to store Windows 8. Although we don't see the reason why you would want to change the default Windows installation directory, it's still a welcomed feature, although we doubt that many people will use it.

Windows 8 is still a long way away, but we might get the chance to try the beta later this year, while the final release will likely become available in late 2012 or early 2013.

It's Wednesday again, which doesn't mean a whole lot other than we're that much closer to Thor being released in theaters this Friday. I've heard good things about it, but I'm always a sucker for comic book movies. If you don't care about Thor, chances are you care about the bucket full of iOS games that are being released this evening.

The way this works is that developers can set a specific release date for their games on the App Store, but since it's a global market, games are released on that date in each region. Fellow sorcerers who have unlocked the mysteries of time zones will know that this means since it's Thursday in New Zealand first, games are released there nearly a day ahead of the US market. All of these games should be available tonight on the American App Store at 11:00 PM EST:

Enduro, 99 / LiteForum Thread We previewed this game a few days ago, and interestingly enough, the developers don't have any of the rights for the game. Who knows whether or not it will get pulled, but if you were intrigued by our preview, you better not wait too long before downloading it.

Frisbee Forever, FreeForum Thread Judging by the response on our forums, I'm not the only one surprised to see that this game is free. We were impressed by its feature list a while back, and I can't wait to give it a spin. 100 tracks to play and 100 frisbees to connect? I'm in.

Imaginary Range, Free / HDForum Thread An odd hybrid by Square Enix that seems to take a comic book and add mini-games to it. Regardless, it's free, so as skeptical as you may be regarding Squeenix's new project, it at least seems worth checking out.

iOOTP Baseball 2011, $4.99Forum Thread Another game that we previewed not long ago! iOOTP brings a similar simulation-style management game that soccer fans have been enjoying for quite a while in other similar games. There's no actual baseball gameplay here, instead you just manage the teams and focus on the stats. Sounds neat.

Piclings, 99Forum Thread I love games that use the iPhone camera in clever ways. Piclings allows you to take photos, then play those photos as a platformer. I can't wait to see how photos of my cat turns into levels in the game.

Pulse: Volume One, $4.99Forum ThreadAuditorium [Free] was a really clever music game, and Pulse is by the same developers, so I'm expecting good things. Eight levels are included, and there's even talk of free updates.

Spider Jack, 99 / HDForum Thread With gameplay that seems to be fairly obviously inspired by Cut the Rope, Spider Jack puts you in charge of, well, Spider Jack who has an appetite for bugs instead of candy. I had a lot of fun with Cut the Rope, so if Spider Jack provides more of the same, I'm OK with that.

Our friends over at Android Central got their hands on some images of a LG smartphone device, which is actually a dual-screen Android phone. It resembles with LG Voyager, which is also a dual-screen phone, but this one will take the dual-screen experience to the next level. The device is known as LG Genesis, and it is successor to LG enV, which is one of the most selling LG devices on Verizon Wireless. It looks like this device is hitting US Cellular instead of Verizon Wireless. Have a look on the specs of the device:

  • Android 2.2 Froyo
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor
  • 3.5-inch external touchscreen.
  • 3.2-inch internal touchscreen
  • Five-row QWERTYkeyboard
  • 430MB of internal memory
  • 8GB microSD card
  • DLNAmultimedia sharing

No words on the price and release, but you can expect this device later this summer. It's possible that this device will also hit Verizon Wireless, and we are waiting for some official words from Verizon. So LG fans, what are your thoughts about this dual-screen LG device?

100 Rogues [Free] had had a torrid history of updates, bug fix updates for those updates, then bug fix updates for those bug fix updates (which also often introduce bugs). Regardless, it's a super-fun roguelike, and even though things get broken, they've added a ton of cool things in the life of the game both for free through updates and via in-app purchase.

Video by AppBank!

The developers also have a great blog that's a really entertaining read if you like seeing what game developers think of other games, as it can provide a lot of insight on design choices in their own projects. We reviewed 100 Rogues a year ago (to the day, actually) if you want to know what you're getting into before you download it. But really, despite its problems, I've still had a bunch of fun playing it, and totally recommend giving it a shot while it's free. It's even universal!

A couple of weeks ago, we reviewed Elemental Rage from Oniric Games. Taking cues from classic game series such as Metroid, Castlevania, and The Legend of Zelda, Elemental Rage offered up a really enjoyable brand of action platforming. It had solid virtual controls, great looking graphics, and an interesting storyline to follow along with. It may not have been quite as complex as the games that inspired it, and it is a bit on the short side, but was there was a ton of fun and totally worth at least a couple of playthroughs.

If you've been mulling around the idea of checking out Elemental Rage, but haven't quite been able to pull the buy button trigger, then I have some good news for you. Lite versions have been released for both the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad versions of the game. The lite version features just the first mission of the game, but will definitely give you a good taste of the controls and gameplay to help you decide if you're into forking over for the complete game.

If you like any of the previously mentioned games, or just good platforming games in general, then don't hesitate to give the lite version of Elemental Rage a try. It has turned out to be one of my surprise favorites out of recent releases, and plenty of members in our forums are loving the game as well.

The Apple iPhone might be the gadget with the most number of cases and other accessories. But this concept case is a first even for the iPhone.

The concept is called Sofie and is designed by Mac Funamizu. Talk about being a true Apple fan, the designer has mac in his name!

The case functions just like any other case by providing protection to your phone but at the same time adds functionality as well. The case will be able to take prints of photos just like a Polaroid.

You can also print a QR code and a geo-tagged map to link it to a digital version on the web on sites such as Flickr.

Back in mid-March, Big Pixel Studios released their colorful physics puzzlers Land-a Panda [99/Lite] and Land-a Panda HD [$1.99/Lite] into the App Store. In it, you shot a rotund panda named Yang Guang from cannon to cannon across cleverly designed levels in an effort to unite him with his mega babe girlfriend Tian Tian. It features 80 levels, each with 3 coins to try and collect in each, as well as Game Center achievements and leaderboards for every world. In essence, Land-a Panda is like an entire puzzle game built around the barrel shooting sequences from the Donkey Kong Country series, and it's just as fun as that description sounds, as we found out in our review.

As we mentioned in that review, there was clearly hints that additional worlds containing new levels would be added in the game, and Big Pixel has just released the first update for Land-a Panda that does just that. This new fifth world is called Panda Island and contains 20 brand new levels to play. These levels feature some new obstacles to deal with as well as new types of cannons to use and enemies to avoid.

Another new feature is an optional action button in the bottom middle of the screen that you can use to activate cannons and other mechanisms in the game. By default, you tap directly on these objects to activate them, but some gamers in our forums and elsewhere felt that this forced you to frequently block too much of the screen. The new action button alleviates this issue, though I have become so used to the normal controls that I still find them superior, but it's nice that the option is there.

Game Center also gets a new leaderboard for Panda Island as well as a few new achievements. Also, the main menu screen now dynamically changes based on the time of day, which is really just a minor cosmetic addition but is the kind of detail that I love nonetheless. If you've already been enjoying Land-a Panda and have worked your way through the initial offering of levels, then snag this new update for 20 new challenges to conquer. If you haven't yet been bitten by the Land-a Panda bug, definitely give the free lite version a try.

Samsung Galaxy Tab is around from almost a year now and it's known as one of the best selling Android tablets. Galaxy Tab gave Apple iPad a very hard time, and now the successors of the tablet are also coming out in few months. Some Galaxy Tab users are little jealous of the new HTC Flyer, which is HTC's first ever Android tablet. Reason is that the tablet comes with a stylus and the stylus enables the HTC Scribe feature, which is an amazing feature. Well, if you also want stylus for your Galaxy Tab, then don't worry because Samsung has launched a stylus for Samsung Galaxy Tab and the stylus features an elegant pen-looking design.

If you want one then Samsung is offering it for $19.99 which is I think a reasonable price. There is only one review of it and the user gave the stylus 5/5, which means that the experience is not bad at all. So Galaxy Tab owners are you going to grab one stylus for your tablet or you are looking for HTC Flyer?
