Rumors are rife that Intel plans to discontinue MeeGo development following the rather tepid market response to hardware based on fledgling OS. Digitimes reports that Intel is planning to"temporarily discontinue development of its MeeGo OS" . If Intel backs down from the OS it would mean the end of the linux based operating system from a commercial point of view and would berelegatedto being a hobbyist OS at best.

On reaching out to Intel we got the following quote :

"Intel does not comment on industry speculation or rumor. We remain committed to MeeGo and open source, and will continue to work with the community to help develop and meet the needs of customers and end users."

Now Intel does not categorically denythe rumor but i have my doubts that the company will give up on the OS when commercial hardware has finally started rolling out at attractive price points. We expect to hear more from Intel on the topic at the upcoming Intel AppUp Elements event in Seattle where they will talk more about the AppUp vision, strategy and future. FoneArena will be reporting live from the event.
