There hasn't been any official words from Netflix regarding this move but it is clear that Netflix has been testing hard the use of HTML5 on various platforms to understand which works better for the user. Netflix didn't announce any changes but users did experience difference in User Interfaces on two difference machines which actually confused a lot of users. But, Netflix was happily testing the user experience to plan their next move.
To be precise, the engineers behind Netflix had ported WebKit to PS3 to make all these changes possible. This could well be the sign of similar changes being pushed into iPad, iPhone and various Android apps which might just end up using different features for enhanced user experience.
Moreover, the PS3 apps can now lean on the similar framework as other platforms are moving to the same. One should not be surprised if Google ends up bringing in completely new versions of Google TV (with updated Netflix) and complete new Chroming experience for its user base. Lastly, what developers can be rest assured about is that HTML5 is slowly and secretly gripping the market which is good for literally everyone.
