airtel-ipad

We just told you about Airtel launching it's website for 3G services and you can see Apple iPad in the list of devices in the 3G Compatibility check. Is that an indication that the iPad 3G Version is launching in India to coincide with the 3G rollout ?

If you pick the iPad from the dropdown , it says that the device is based on WCDMA and that it's recommended to use a HSPA based device for higher speeds.

We told you about Airtel offering microSIM cards last month, so those SIM cards might be for either the iPad 3G or iPhone 4.

Thanks to Samrat for spotting this !

We all know that operators in India are gearing up to launch 3G Services in India. The License Fee has been paid by the auction winners and government has allotted the 3G spectrum to the operators. Now Airtel's website is displaying details about 3G services . No pricing or launch date info is available but it seems like material used to educate users about the benefits of 3G. Airtel has won the bid for 13 circles in India Delhi , Mumbai , AP, Karnataka , Tamilnadu, UP West, Rajasthan, W.B, Himachal Pradesh,Bihar , Assam , North East and Jammu & Kashmir. There is also indication that Airtel might be offering HSPA speeds which translates to around 21 Mbps download speeds !

There is also a form which lets you stay up to date about the launch of the 3G services. Regarding the charges and launch date here is what Airtel says

We will inform all our customers about the activation process of 3G, it's availability in your area, charges etc. as soon as we launch our 3G services. You will also be able to access all this information on airtel.in/airtel3g

You can also check if your current handset is compatible with 3G networks. Airtel is saying that you wont need a new SIM card to activate 3G services and you can get 3G on your existing number

Are you ready for 3G ? Looks like we will have 3G finally this Diwali !

South Korea is home to Samsung, and Samsung is bringing a new device to S.Korea. Samsung has launched a new device in S.Korea which is known as the Samsung Galaxy K. As you can see the image above, the phone is identical to Samsung Galaxy S, and the only difference between Galaxy S and Galaxy K is that the Galaxy K comes with Android 2.2, which means you can enjoy the Flash 10.1 on it. The phone comes with the same 3.7 inch AMOLED touchscreen and 1GHz Hummingbird processor. The phones also comes with 8 GB internal memory, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Samsung Galaxy K is going for 800,000 Won ($716) on South Korea KT. I don't know what is the point of this device, because in few months Samsung Galaxy S will be upgraded to Android 2.2. What do you people think?

I'll fully admit when I first caught wind of Bug Heroes, I was a little skeptical because it certainly wasn't the first time a developer posted about a dual stick shooter with a fantastic (and somewhat unrealistic) sounding feature list in our upcoming games forum. With this recent gameplay trailer, I'm a believer in Bug Heroes, and really can't wait to try it. Foursaken Media, developer of N.Y. Zombies [99 / Lite], has experience in building fast-paced iPhone games with tons of enemies on screen at once and it looks like that know-how is going to shine in a big way in Bug Heroes.

The basic premise of the game involves playing one of three unique bug heroes, each with their own play style. From there, you search for food to add to your food stash which you must defend from endless waves of invading insects. As you play you will unlock additional abilities and equipment for your bug heroes and turrets to equip on your food stash. To mix things up further, side quests are thrown in that you'll optionally be able to complete while you try to survive. You can also switch to any of the bug heroes at any of their time to utilize each of their strengths to your advantage.

Check out the trailer:

Bug Heroes is coming packed with an experience point and stat system, and over 25 different abilities and pieces of equipment to aid in your survival. In addition, there are over 25 varied enemies to deal with, 7 turrets to defend your stash, and two different game modes each with their own online leaderboard. Bug Heroes is still in development, and is approaching beta testing. The developers have been incredibly active in our forums, so if you have any questions or feedback for them, be sure to stop by the thread.

I must mention this in every post that has anything to do with single device iPad multiplayer, but two (or more) player games on the iPad are almost always universally awesome. Everything from elaborately crafted ports of board games like Small World [$6.99] to the simplest of games like Omium [99] are a ton of fun when played with another person. If for whatever reason you've disregarded my previous encouragement to try out two player gaming on the iPad, you really need to download any or all of VersusPad's free games. They're all fairly simple, but serve as an excellent example of just how well two player gaming works on the device.

Also, to make things a little more interesting, all of these games were developed in PhoneGap, a cross-platform development framework that allows developers to build their games in HTML and Javascript while still being able to take advantage of the core features of the device as a native app. If you're great with Javascript/CSS, but bad with C++, PhoneGap is a free open source way for you to get started building games and apps on the iPhone. Anyway, on to the games-

Ogs, Free [Gameplay Video] In this game, players dispatch creatures called "Ogs" to defend their own island and attack the opponent's island. A bar at the bottom of the screen slowly fills up, allowing you to deploy more advanced Ogs. The game is over when either player's island is destroyed.

The Roswell Game, Free [Gameplay Video] Up to four players at once buzz around the iPad collecting crystals using virtual joysticks situated in each corner of the screen. The game is over when one player collects 75 crystals.

City Bucks, Free [Gameplay Video] My favorite of the three, players place businesses on to an initially empty city grid to lure customers in to buy things. Earning money unlocks more expensive (and attractive) buildings. Monster attacks and disasters like meteor strikes spice gameplay up, and add an element of risk to saving up for one super-expensive business. I'd love to see this game concept fleshed out a little more, as it seems like it is on the verge of something really cool.

Press Release

REDMOND, Wash. Oct. 11, 2010 Microsoft Corp. today joined its partners in revealing nine new Windows Phone 7 handsets that will be available this holiday season from leading mobile operators in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. With more than 60 mobile operators in over 30 countries worldwide committed to bringing Windows Phones to market, the millions of people around the world looking for a phone that plays as hard as it works will have a variety of phones from leading device-makers to choose from.
Learn more about Windows Phone 7

"We have a beautiful lineup in this first wave of Windows Phone 7 handsets," said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft. "Microsoft and its partners are delivering a different kind of mobile phone and experience one that makes everyday tasks faster by getting more done in fewer steps and providing timely information in a 'glance and go' format."

Global Portfolio

Microsoft and its partners have worked together closely to create a different kind of phone with new experiences that bring together what people care about most. Windows Phone 7 will be available in a variety of sleek form factors from device-makers such as Dell, HTC Corp., LG and Samsung, and from mobile operators including América Móvil, AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, Movistar, O2, Orange, SFR, SingTel, Telstra, TELUS, T-Mobile USA and Vodafone. All Windows Phone 7 phones will include the high-performance Snapdragon™ processor from Qualcomm. A broad selection of phones will begin shipping in holiday 2010 with more arriving in 2011, including phones from Sprint and Verizon Wireless. In addition, select models will be available at Microsoft Store locations and from Amazon.

Windows Phone 7, Glance and Go

In today's busy world we are spending more time heads-down on our phones than interacting with the people we're sitting next to and missing out on important life moments. Windows Phone 7 was designed to deliver a mobile experience that has the phone working better for people, bringing together the things they care about most and helping them to get things done faster.

Windows Phone 7 breaks the current smartphone convention to help people quickly and easily find and consume data, information and services from the Web and applications. The new phones are distinguished by unique design and integrated experiences built from Microsoft's deep portfolio such as Xbox LIVE, Microsoft Office Mobile, Zune, Windows Live, Bing and more.

For example, the customizable Start screen with Live Tiles is a personal experience, showing people their own content. The Live Tiles come to life with real-time updates from the Web such as news, appointments or the status of friends. New Live Tiles can be easily created from whatever content a consumer wants, such as applications, websites and music.

Fueling New Experiences

Windows Phone 7 marks a new era in mobile gaming as the first phone1 to put the power of Xbox LIVE into the palm of people's hands with a blockbuster lineup of game titles from award-winning publishers. In addition to the titles already announced earlier this year, Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) today announced the first wave of EA games coming to Windows Phone 7 this fall. As part of Microsoft's managed portfolio of Xbox LIVE titles, all EA games for Windows Phone 7 will be Xbox LIVE-enabled. EA will deliver a portfolio of titles that offers something for every mobile gamer, from casual to core, including "Need for Speed™ Undercover," "Tetris®" and "The Sims™ 3."

Windows Phone 7 is also the first to offer the Zune music experience on a phone: People can play their music collection, synced wirelessly from their PC, or stream or download new tunes from Windows Marketplace. An optional Zune Pass subscription is available.

Search is made easier with a dedicated button to help people find what they need, whether in contacts, in Marketplace, in e-mail or on the Web. From the Start screen, the Search button delivers Bing for mobile, delivering Web results, local information, maps, directions and more.

There are few things that send me in to a Wayne Knight nerd squeal than the complete over-analysis of ridiculous things. Today's example of this comes from Wired physics guru Rhett Allain who geeked out in a major way over Angry Birds [99 / Lite / HD], not obsessing over collecting every star, or topping leaderboards, but instead looking at the raw physics of the game. Or, as Rhett put it:

But what about the physics? Do the birds have a constant vertical acceleration? Do they have constant horizontal velocity? Let's find out, shall we? Oh, why would I do this? Why can't I just play the dumb game and move on. That is not how I roll. I will analyze this, and you can't stop me.

Using video tracking software, Allain loaded up one of the many solution videos on YouTube to record the velocity of the bird and the acceleration of its vertical motion. Armed with these figures, and assuming that Angry Birds takes place on Earth, through the magic of math he was able to determine that the launcher in Angry Birds is about 5 meters tall. Once he figured this out, it was trivial to measure the birds themselves using the launcher as a ruler of sorts. If the launcher is 5m tall, the standard angry red bird is around 70cm (or 2 feet and 3.5 inches) tall.

That's one huge bird.

We have Apple's iPad, Dell's Streak, Blackberry's PlayBook tablet, Toshiba's Froyo 100. It's big time that we add Hitachi into the list too. With plenty different versions of internet tablet already on the market, Hitachi had to come with something that attracts the consumers.

The 6.6-inch tablet by Hitachi has a resolution of over 1600 x 1200 across an IPS panel for an amazing 302 pixels per inch of the device. For those who still don't understand the gravity of this specification, let me just clear your doubts and put things into perspective. These are super attractive displays for a tablet.

The above specifications are very close to Apple's 3.5 inches astonishingly clear retina display and is way above the 132 ppi density of iPad's 10 inch display that has resolution of just 1024 x 768 pixels. It is also much improved over the 169 ppi density of the 7-inch 1024 x 600 pixels Galaxy Tab and the recently launched Blackberry PlayBook.

Though the size does get complex yet, Hitachi's tablet seems to easily manage 400 nits of brightness and 800:1 of contrast ratio. We are still not sure of the launch date of this blackhorse tablet, neither are we certain about its pricing. We will keep you updated when we have any updates.

We all know that while there are a lot of cool developer houses in Asia, Europe and Africa, for whom coding for Nokia, and Symbian more specifically, is on the high priority list, there are still tons of amazing software companies in North America who would rather play the lottery by publishing their titles on iOS and Android amongst fierce competition by hundreds of thousands of other apps, than play The Wheel of Fortune and work on Symbian where getting any fame is almost a guarantee.

So why am I making the statement that if developers don't come now, I don't think they ever will? Well because of three factors essentially.

  1. The first one is the 10 million dollar prizes competition Nokia has launched with AT&T for developers in North America who release their apps on the Ovi Store.
  2. The second is the Nokia Developer Day that the company held during CTIA, one of the largest conventions in the USA, a few days ago where they explained the process of developing for Symbian using Qt, Web Runtime and Flash, and how to publish on the Ovi Store with almost no fees.
  3. The third is that they gave away one Nokia N8 to every developer present at the conference, which adds up to all the N8s that they also gave to developers during Nokia World 2010.

So if you're an American developer and you just learned that it's relatively easy and lucrative to make apps and games for Symbian during the Developer Day, you were just handed a phone to make sure you can test your apps on the real thing and not an emulator, and you know that if you do a good job, you might end up with oodles of cash in a country-wide competition, but you still can't be arsed to work on a Symbian app for the Ovi Store, then there's something fundamentally wrong with Nokia's perception in the United States and I'm afraid it's too little too late to fix that.

What do you think? Are these three reasons enough to incite some decent developer work from the USA on Symbian and do you expect lots of cool new apps and games on the Ovi Store in the next few months? Or do you think all is lost in that market?

Android OS users have waited for a Skype app for a long time and as you know, the official Skype app for Android OS was released a few days ago, but it came with certain limitations. If you feel frustrated by those limitations, you'll be pleased to know that there's a hacked version of the Skype app for Android that removes those limitations.

As you know, you're be able to send IMs, call mobile phones and landline phones with this app via WiFi and 3G. The downside is that you can use those features only via WiFi in USA while other countries have full WiFi and 3G support. Luckily for all US users, custom .apk version of this app is available and it removes the 3G block in the USA. This custom app is developed by xeudoxus and it is now available for download here.

It remains a mystery why Skype app didn't have 3G support in US, and if you feel irritated by this limitation, make sure that you check out the tweaked version of Skype app.
