Here at GDC we had a chance to sit down with retro savvy Dan Bliss from BinarySquare and preview his upcoming iPad / iPhone (Universal) game Flick Rocket. With this one, I think Dan has outdone himself on delivering the retro aesthetic goodness; the game's visuals pretty much jump off the screen and smack you in the face.

Flick Rocket is something of a mash-up of Missile Command, Space Invaders, Centipede, and Asteroids and that'squite a combination. As in Missile Command, you control a defense turret with the goal of defending a city from attack. But this time around, your missiles are much more obviously missiles, rendered out in glowing pixellated goodness. They are dispatched with a swipe mechanic that sends them off at any trajectory you choose. So, who are you shooting at? That's where things get interesting.

The first type of enemy you must defend against is a horde of Space Invaders-style alien baddies that slowly march across the screen while dropping bombs upon Tokyo. The second assault comes in the form of a pixellated space centipede that meanders about the screen in an effort to flatten Paris. The third and final type of onslaught comes in the form of a brutal hale of asteroids that, unchecked, may spell the end of Los Angeles.

There are a number of power-ups that appear when certain enemies are destroyed, including a driller shot which lets your rockets cut through a swath of enemies and bounce off the walls; a bounce shot which causes your rocket to bounce about the advancing enemies, taking out several before exploding; a blaster shot that unleashes multiple warheads from your rocket upon detonation, and a confusion power-up that causes your rockets to fly all willy nilly. And, while firing rockets is a core mechanic, don't do so with too great an abandon, as there is a rocket damage multiplier that rewards you for judicious use of your weapons.

Flick Rocket features online leaderboard and achievement tracking, a Campaign and a quick-play Arcade mode, and requires a bit of strategy to rank well. It's a clever title with a great look that I'm anxious to spend more than those few minutes in the Marriott lobby with.

It seems that the launch of the Apple iPad 2 has not just amazed users but also manufacturers. Samsung feels that their new flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is inadequate to take on the iPad 2.

The concern came from the VP of Samsung Mobile, Lee Don Joo who said that he fears the thin waistline and pricing of the iPad 2 might affect the sales of their Galaxy Tab 10.1.

He also said that the pricing might cause Samsung to revise their pricing scheme as well. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 was initially planned to be priced above the original 7? Galaxy Tab.

The newly introduced iPad 2 is nearly as thing as Samsung's Galaxy S II which is one of the thinnest smartphones. The iPad 2 is just 8.8mm thick while the Galaxy S II is 8.49mm and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is 10.9mm thick.

Samsung is also expected to announce their new 8.9 " Tablet on March 22nd, at the CTIA expo in USA.

Last October we brought to you news that Sony Ericsson might be bringing out Windows Phone 7 devices in 2011. The rumours might be true because the above picture shows a Sony Ericsson device running on the Windows Phone 7 OS.

The phone is a side slide out QWERTY device with the Windows Phone 7 buttons. There is no XPERIA branding on the device but the design seems to indicate so. From the picture the only features we can make out are:

  • 3.5mm Audio Jack
  • microUSB Port
  • 4 Row QWERTY Keyboard
  • 3.5? or Larger Touchscreen

We are not quite sure if the picture is real or just a fake. But the odds are in favour of Windows Phone 7. Although even if it is a real device, we are not sure if it will be released.

Almost a year ago, I discovered the joys of using Audioboo for covering live events on Twitter. See, Audioboo is kind of the audio version of Twitpic for Twitter. You get 5 minutes of audio recording, and you can set that to be automatically sent to Twitter with a link to listen to the Boo. Quite simple, and when you want to get live impressions of people, it works wonderfully well. Except that there wasn't a version for Symbian before and I had to use my iPod Touch and wait until I had WiFi around to upload my Boos, which defeated the purpose of its instantaneous approach.

Well, that problem is now solved as Audioboo has recently been launched in the Ovi Store, and after a few days of being limited to the UK only, is now available worldwide.

The Audioboo application is quite well designed while keeping it simple. There are 3 tabs: Boos, Record and Account.

The Account tab is the one you should hit first, so you can set up your login details. It also allows you to set your preference for whether or not to geotag Boos.

The Record tab is quite simple: a button to start/pause recording, one to restart if things get out of hand, and one to publish if you're satisfied with the result. When you hit publish, you're taken to an Upload page that lets you listen to the Boo, add a name and tags to it, before uploading it to your account.

The Boos tab comes with a drop-down menu allowing you to access your own Boos, popular ones, recent ones, featured ones, and Boos from people nearby or those you are following.

While there are a few functions missing, like the ability to associate an image with a Boo, or change the preference of tweeting a certain recording or not, AudioBoo is a welcome application on Symbian. It's elegantly crafted and simple to use, and comes at the awesome price of free. Download it from the Ovi Store now and tell us what you think about it. Are audio recordings something you'd be interested in doing more often? And in what circumstances would you believe them to be most useful?
