Rimelands: Hammer of Thor [$4.99] is a new tactical turn-based RPG from developers Dicework and Crescent Moon Games of Ravensword [$3.99/Lite] fame. We previewed a hands-on video of the game about a month ago that explained how the turn-based combat worked as well as showcasing some of the games many items and weapons. With Rimelands now available, weve been able to experience these first hand, and came away impressed with how well the different elements of the game come together. The dice-rolling combat mechanic gives it an old school pen-and-paper feel, while the dungeon crawling and loot collection offers plenty to discover in the game. Couple that with an interesting story and top-notch visuals, and Rimelands is one of the best RPG experiences you can have on the iPhone.

Humans have squandered the resources of the world, throwing off the balance of the ecosystem and turning their once beautiful lands into an uninhabitable frozen wasteland. They are forced to move into underground vaults for a thousand years, and when they finally emerge they find that a new race called the Fair Folk have taken over the dominant role above ground. Humans try to reclaim their territory, and war ensues. An uneasy peace is finally reached between the two sides, and they are able to precariously coexist together above ground. This leaves countless underground vaults filled with treasures of the last millennium, ready to be explored and exacted by you, treasure hunter Rose Cristo.

The story in Rimelands sets the stage perfectly for a dungeon crawling adventure. Youll play the role of Rose as she travels to the many towns and vaults in Rimelands discovering treasures, completing quests, and evolving her character with the multitude of items and abilities available. The game is played from an isometric viewpoint and combat and movement are grid-based. This can take some getting used to as youre only able to move in four directions rather than being able to move around the world freely. Coming within striking distance of an enemy allows you to engage in the turn-based combat which is a mixture of long-ranged and melee attacks. An interesting dice mechanic determines your offensive and defensive effectiveness, and playing Rimelands feels like an interactive board game where all of the dull pen-and-paper stuff has been automated for you.

An overhead map lets you travel to the towns and vaults that you discover during the game. Quests are obtained by talking with characters around the world much like your typical RPG. There is a main storyline to follow as well as many side quests to pick up and complete. The dungeons in Rimelands are full of dangerous enemies, as well as many unique treasures. Traversing these dungeons feels very Diablo-esque, as there are many rooms to explore and a ton of loot to obtain, although with strategic turn-based combat instead of the hack n slash variety. Making your way through the dungeons is incredibly fun, and I found it hard to stop playing until I was sure Id explored every nook and cranny of each in order not to miss any lucrative treasure chests.

One of the high points of Rimelands is the extensive variety of items and weapons in the game, as well as the various skill trees for your character. Defeating enemies earns you gold and experience points, and upon leveling up you can choose a new ability from one of three skill trees. Barbarian brings melee effects, Assassin boosts your ranged abilities, and Shaman covers magical abilities. Theres quite a bit of diversity with how you want to build your character, and good reason to play through the game multiple times focusing in different areas each time. An engineering dynamic is in the game as well, allowing you to build different weapons with blueprints that you find. Its an interesting idea, but not totally necessary due to the many excellent weapons youre bound to come across in the game anyway.

Graphically Rimelands is a beautiful game. The characters and enemies are fairly detailed, and their animations are excellent. The environments are also very attractive, with snowy terrain when you are in the above ground areas and dark dungeons with nice lighting effects when you go underground. The in-game graphics do have a slightly jagged look to them, but nothing overly detracting. Retina Display support is a possibility down the road, as is a native iPad version, although nothing has been finalized. Rimelands runs just fine in 2x mode on the iPad, and players in our forums are definitely enjoying the game this way. The story is told via static illustrations and text, and by in-game dialogue between characters as well. There isnt any full motion video or animated cutscenes, but the story is engaging and the illustrated bits look great.

There are plenty of other nuances to Rimelands, and it really is a game with a grand scope. You can expect to get about 8-10 hours out of one playthrough, and there is good incentive to go through multiple times and try out different character builds. Plus, this should only be the first chapter in the Rimelands universe, as more content will be coming down the line via updates as well as planned sequels. Dicework and Crescent Moon have a winner on their hands here, and Ill be looking forward to seeing more from this series. I dont typically love turn-based strategy games, but Rimelands had me hooked almost instantly. Its easy enough to get into whether you enjoy the strategic combat, loot collecting, character leveling, or just want to uncover the story in the unique steampunk universe. For fans of these elements, or any gamer in general, Rimelands: Hammer of Thor is a solid choice.

With mobile phones these days so heavily focused on new features like applications and mobile platforms, it seems many have forgotten the sole purpose of mobiles, for talking. Orange though havent, in the video below, the network provider demos their new technology which aims to provide noise reduction but with improved voice clarity Orange HD Voice. Orange will be the first in the UK to launch this service. Enjoy the video below as opera singer Pamela Hay tests the clarity of Orange HD Voice.

Heres the full press release

Orange today announced the first major advancement in UK mobile voice calling for 20 years with the launch of mobile High Definition HD Voice. Providing crystal clear sound quality for calls, mobile users will see the service set a new consumer benchmark, with todays move testament to Oranges continuing focus on innovation.

HD Voice offers a proven improvement in the sound quality of traditional mobile voice calls. The service eliminates the distance between friends, relatives and colleagues to make callers voices sound like they do when communicating face to face. Reducing the background noise, hisses and crackles of normal mobile calls, HD Voice also excels in noisy environments, so whether youre at a football match or concert, on a building site or next to heavy traffic HD Voice gives louder, clearer, sharper mobile calls. This will come as a relief for a third 32% of Brits who blame background noise including road works or noisy chatty friends as the biggest disturbance in conversations*.

Orange HD Voice is available at no extra cost to all Orange mobile customers who take a HD Voice enabled handset. From launch, new variants of the Nokia 5230, Nokia X6, Nokia E5 and Samsung Omnia Pro will be HD Voice enabled with further manufactures expected to offer HD handsets in the coming months. All HD Voice enabled handsets will be labelled with the Orange HD Voice logo, helping customers to easily recognise those devices that support the new Orange HD Voice service. HD Voice demonstration units will also be available in Orange shops.

Tom Alexander, Chief Executive of Everything Everywhere, the company which runs Orange UK, said: "Although what we use our mobile handsets for has evolved significantly in the past few years the way we make mobile calls hasnt changed a great deal since the 1990s. So were proud to be the first telecommunications brand in the UK to change this and offer customers a revolutionary new calling experience. With mobile HD Voice hearing really is believing".

HD Voice also opens up new opportunities for better ways of working in business. The arrival of HD Voice is hotly anticipated by the broadcasting industry, which believes that the service could reduce its reliance on expensive ISDN lines and the need to ferry guests to studios for interviews. Other industries that will benefit significantly from HD Voice include those with significant background noise like the construction and manufacturing industries.

I cant think of a better way to come down off a post-keynote afterglow than a bundle of freebies to download. The standard free game disclaimer is in effect here in that nearly all of these free promotions are for a limited time, and while they are all free as of this writing, they can return to paid at any time. If any of these games sound interesting to you, its probably better to download them sooner rather than later. And of course, as always, for a full listing of paid games that went free, stop by AppShopper.

Hoggy, Free A cute puzzle platformer that we enjoyed quite a bit in our review. Hoggy comes loaded with an oodle of levels to complete but if the game leaves you wanting more, theres even a 99 DLC level pack to download.

Veggie Samurai, Free The war between whether Veggie Samurai or Fruit Ninja [99] is the better game has been waging on our forums for quite some time now. Heres your chance to download one of them for free to see for yourself.

Rebirth of Fortune, Free Heavily influenced by Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics, this strategy RPG seems to have a surprising amount of depth. The graphics are great, and theres even local multiplayer.

bitFLIP HD: Intense Puzzle Action, Free The iPhone version of bitFlip [99] is still a paid app, but if youve got an iPad make sure to grab this cool multi-layered puzzle game. It even has single device multiplayer which is a lot of fun if youve got someone else to play with.

Irritating Game, Free The iPhone port of a free Flash game with the same name. In Irritating Game you have to deal with two balls that move independent of each other on two different paddles. As promised, gameplay is irritating, but oddly appealing.

Fayju Ball, Free An incredibly cool puzzle game where you must roll balls of different colors in to matching holes. What blew my mind the first time I played the game was that some of these puzzles require you to hold the phone upside down to mall the ball roll towards the screen. Definitely give this one a try.

TowerMadness, Free This game has already been free a few times already, so heres your chance to grab it if you missed it before. Tower Madness is a free open-field tower defense game with a bunch of maps, endless mode, 9 towers with 5 upgrades each, and additional level packs available via DLC.

Apple is in the spotlight this morning with its new generation of iPods. After the amazing iPod Touch 4G and iPod Nano 6G here comes the latest version of the Apples smallest iPod, the iPod Shuffle. Like all other iPods this one has changed as well and it has several new features to offer to its users so lets check it out.

As already mentioned, iPod Shuffle is the smallest from all Apples iPods, but despite its size, this device can offer some amazing performances. Weve already seen three generations of iPod Shuffle and now we finally got the forth version.

As you remember, the previous version of iPod Shuffle didnt have any buttons for navigation and instead of buttons it was using the VoiceOver feature. Now Apple has decided to bring back the buttons to the latest version of iPod Shuffle and that way weve got playback and volume control back on the miniature iPod. However, VoiceOver feature is still available as well to all users that prefer it. Interesting thing about iPod Shuffle 4G is that it looks like a smaller version of iPod Shuffle 2G, and just like its predecessors, itll have a clip.

iPod Shuffle 4G might be the smallest iPod on the market, but it will provide you with the same great music experience. It comes with 2 GB of internal memory and the built in battery will provide 15 hours of playback time. iPod Shuffle 4G will be available in five different colors and it come with a pricetag of $49 or 39 if youre here in the UK.

The Taiwanese developer known for their LCDs, TVs and netbooks is now jumping on the trend wagon by launching their own tablet, so heres some information about it.

Hannspree will be another Android tablet running on Android 2.2. Besides Android OS 2.2, this tablet will provide powerful hardware specifications, allowing you to enjoy your multimedia to the fullest. This device comes with a fast 1 GHz Tegra 2 processor, dual ARM Cortex A9 and co-processors that will provide maximum performances.

As for the screen size, this tablet comes with 10.1-inch backlit LED display that is capable of showing 1024600 pixel resolution. As for the storage space, this device comes with 16GB of internal storage space that will be more than enough for all of your multimedia files and applications. Of course, storage space can be expanded with additional Micro-SD card.

In addition, this device features motion and light sensors as well as mini HDMI output. As for the connectivity, this device offers WiFi and bluetooth support. The selling point of all the spec? This Android tablet will only weigh 790g, not far behind at all from the iPad which weighs 700g.

Although we dont have the name of this device we know that it will sport Android OS 2.2 and therefore flash support and if you combine that with great hardware specifications youre looking at one decent tablet. Were expecting to see this tablet in November with a pricetag of 399 Euros or $505.

Throwing open its typically-closed-doors to a live web audience, albeit only for those on the Mac OS or iOS platform, Apple unveiled a slew of new products and services to a capacity crowd at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. There were upgrades detailed for the iOS platform, including the iPad, a whole new line-up of iPods, a brand new arisen-from-the-ashes Apple TV and iTunes 10 going all social In case you missed it, heres all the news you can use, list style for easy consumption, including some nuggets that the casual observer may have missed in the din of last nights news.

New iPod Touch: The iPhone4 without the phone

  • As we estimated, the new iPod Touch got all the hardware upgrades from the iPhone 4, including a high resolution Retina Display, the potent A4 chip and the 3-axis gyroscope for gaming. And finally, the iPod Touch gets some camera love, with a front facing camera for FaceTime sessions with other iPods/iPhones and a rear camera for casual photography. All this, while managing to lose some serious weight the new iPod Touch is all of 7.2 mm thick or thin thats significantly thinner than the impossibly thin previous gen. It makes the iPhone 4 look fat. Enough said.
  • The iPod Touch also adds in 720p HD video recording, but according to the tech specs, the new iPod Touchs rear camera takes photos at a disappointingly low 960720 resolution.
  • On sale next week in the US, expect an early October availability in India in time for Diwali, maybe? Pricing is at $229, $299 and $399 for the 8, 32 and 64 GB models. Significantly, even the entry-level iPod Touch gets all the fancy hardware upgrades, which makes a strong case for a no-contract-riddled device that has almost all of the stuff we love about the iPhone 4 at a seriously tempting price point.

New iPod nano: Hip to be Square

  • Gone is the click-wheel of the hugely popular iPod nano, replaced by a square touch screen, almost like a miniature iOS device. The size reductions are so drastic that like the newly announced iPod shuffle, it has a clip that allows it to be worn. It also figures a 24-hour battery life, and a screen that can be rotated with a pinch-and-twist action. Color options are the same as the shuffle, plus a granite and red version. Availability is the same as the Touch, and it retails at $149 for 8GB, and $179 for 16GB.
  • Apples added in watch-face time display, so a watch strap accessory is only a matter of time
  • While VoiceOver, FM and Nike+ were retained, the size reduction didnt come without its share of exclusions not only is the rear camera and video recording gone, so is video playback.
  • Also, while the UI looks like the nanos running iOS, with several features looking like exact duplicates from the iOS devices, the iPod Nano is running its own custom operating system, with an iOS-like skin slapped on top.

New iPod Shuffle: V2 + V3?

  • In an admission to failings of the last shuffle specifically in terms of the missing buttons, the new iPod Shuffle ditched the ill-received form factor and reverted to standard buttons layout that most users are familiar with, while retaining the previous gen earphone controls, belt clip and the playlists. $49 for 2GB in five colors, coming next month to India.
  • On an aside, the iPod Classic is still for sale but with no changes. Time for a quiet death, perhaps?

iTunes 10: Ping-alicious

  • With a new logo that loses the almost-anachronistic CD imagery, iTunes 10 didnt quite make the transition to the cloud, but it did go massively social with Ping its new social network based around music. Think twitter meets last.fm meets Facebook-sharing, and you can see where Ping is going.
  • Once you set up Ping with your privacy options you can be public, friends-only or invisible you see the recent activity of the friends and artists you are following, what music they are listening to and endorsing, and even be alerted to concert schedules It can be accessed on-the-go from iPhones and iPod Touches.
  • iTunes 10 is the only launch item available today, and its coming down as we write this. At 85 megs, its got a lot to learn from its iPod cousins as far as losing weight is concerned

Apple TV: One More Thing Hobby

  • Finally coming out of the shadows of a serious hobby at Apple, the new $99 Apple TV is a fourth the size of the original, and features a dark black design possibly for the erstwhile black sheep of the family? It loses the local storage and instead streams all of its content from the Internet and your local machines/iOS devices. It connects to your TV using HDMI for 720p output no 1080p, and theres Ethernet and 802.11n WiFi for Internet/local access. Theres also support for Netflix, YouTube, Flickr and Apples MobileMe.
  • The big news really should have been the ability to rent first-run HD movies for $4.99, and HD TV shows for $.99 from FOX and ABC, with more networks on the cards. Massive pipe dream this, at least for folks in India there is no Indian iTunes Music store in sight, leaving the Apple TV capable of only local streaming for folks in India. Fix the basic issue for us first, Apple
  • Despite the fact that the new Apple TV is running an A4 processor which powers the other iOS devices, apps have been given a miss for the Apple TV. For now.
  • Apples new AirPlay, which replaces AirTunes, will allow the streaming of content from an iOS device to an Apple TV. During the keynote, Jobs demonstrated streaming a movie from an iPad to an Apple TV over a Wi-Fi network.

iOS updates: 4.1 and beyond

  • Wink-wink-nudge-nudge numbers were laid out, especially with a focus 230,000 new activations occuring each day, which takes the total number of iOS devices out there iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch included to 120 million. Around 6.5 billion apps have been downloaded from the AppStore thats almost as many human beings on the planet The App Store hosts 250,000 apps, 10% of which are iPad exclusive apps.
  • The next update for iPod Touch and iPhones iOS 4.1 will be available starting next week, and will feature bug fixes for issues around the proximity sensor, Bluetooth and iPhone 3G performance. Also baked-in to the platform will be the capability to take high dynamic range HDR photographs within the default camera app. This means that for every photo you take, the camera actually three photos at slightly varying exposures and blends them together to make photographs rich in detail. Especially useful when youre taking tricky light photos, such as people or objects in the shade, or in scenes with great degrees of contrast. Game Center, Apples play on X-Box Live-style social gaming will also finally launch with the 4.1 release, and will allow gamers to network with friends, post high scores online and get matched up with players of similar abilities while playing multiplayer games.
  • iPad owners finally have a date with iOS4 features, with a November date for iOS 4.2, which will bring all the functionality of iOS 4.1 to the iPad, including folders, multitasking, and in a first, wireless printing to networked printers on the iPad. In saying so, Steve Jobs also possibly let slip of an iPad feature he mentioned that 4.2 would give the iPad all of the new features the iPhone is getting from 4.1, including HDR photography. A camera on the way in the iPad, possibly as early as November? We think so

Apple Retail Stores update

  • Impressive stuff this. In the larger scheme of things, it should not make big news when Apple opens three new stores internationally, bringing their total tally of Apple run stores worldwide to 300. Cast a glance at the three latest entrants Paris, London and Shangai and prepare to be floored Hit the links if you havent seen these already
  • The numbers are equally impressive Apple stores occasionally have single days when 1-million customers visit their stores worldwide, and more than 50% of their customers walk in to buy their first Mac.

As you might have heard or read, Apple is releasing the latest generation of its iPod devices. Weve already seen what new iPod Touch 4G will be capable of, and now next on our list is, what I think the most drastic change / improvement the new sixth generation iPod Nano.

The new iPod Nano, or iPod Nano 6G if you prefer, gets a completely new look with a new LCD display. Thats right, you can say goodbye to the click wheel because iPod Nano 6G is all about multitouch display. With the new 1.54-inch 240240 multitouch LCD display, the iPod Nano looks even smaller and it resembles the iPod Shuffle in many ways.

Since the click wheel has been removed, this version of the iPod Nano has a minimal design consisting only of volume buttons and sleep/wake button. In addition, iPod Nano 6G gets a clip so now youll be able to attach it on your clothes.

Besides that, this device comes with FM radio and accelerometer, it will feature VoiceOver and will be fully compatible with Nike +. Interestingly this device will come with icon-based UI that will look similar to that seen on iOS.

iPod Nano 6G went through design changes and although its a shame that this version wont have a camera it will boast changes that makes it once again unique from many PMP currently on the market, a characteristic that continues to define Apples products. Two models will be available, the 8GB model will cost $149 and 16GB model $179 if youre in the US and 129 and 159 respectively if youre in the UK.

A couple of weeks ago, we had a chance to get some hands-on time with the iPhone and iPad version of Puzzle Agent from Telltale Games. The story of FBI puzzle detective Nelson Tethers was coming together nicely for the iOS devices, and now the game is finally available. Puzzle Agent succeeds beautifully in the art style and story departments, but falls a little flat with the actual gameplay offered. If you go into Puzzle Agent expecting a robust puzzle game with a lot of content and replayability, youll likely be disappointed. However, if youre looking for an excellent mystery to solve with humorous characters and an interesting plot, youll find a lot to enjoy about the overall experience of Puzzle Agent.

The game starts with Nelson sitting at his desk in the FBI headquarters. You can tell he doesnt see a whole lot of action, as he is surprised to receive a phone call asking him to go on an assignment in the field. The eraser factory in Scoggins, Minnesota has ceased production, and thus been unable to supply the White House with their required allotment of erasers. All inquiries as to what the problem is at the eraser factory have resulted in odd puzzle-related responses from the townsfolk in Scoggins, making Nelson the perfect candidate to have investigate the situation. Youll travel to Scoggins to question people, solve puzzles, and uncover a twisted tale of what has gone awry at the eraser factory.

Puzzle Agent functions similar to other point-and-click adventure games, giving you a scene with various interactive elements to investigate. A circle will emanate from wherever you touch on the screen, and an icon will show up within that circle if something can be interacted with. I love this mechanic as it allows me to easily check an entire area for clues without tapping on every square inch of the screen. Talking with characters in the game is definitely the high point of Puzzle Agent. Each character is fully voiced and has multiple points of conversation to engage in. The amount of personality and humor that the characters exude through the dialogue is phenomenal, and playing through Puzzle Agent is analogous to watching a well crafted animated film. The art style is also very pleasing, featuring the minimalist hand drawn style of Graham Annable who created the Grickle comics and animated shorts.

The actual puzzles youll be solving in Puzzle Agent are a mixed bag. Some are interesting, intuitive, and fun while others are just plain awkward and frustrating. Many times its just not clear what you are supposed to be doing in a given puzzle. A hint system is in place in case you get stuck, so it never really prevents you from progressing, but it can be annoying to spend time trying to solve a difficult puzzle with trial and error when you are immersed in the story. Another frustration with Puzzle Agent is the controls. The game is designed very well for touch screen, but the actual responsiveness when touching or dragging items is not so great. It feels like the game is optimized for the mouse and cursor of the Mac/PC version, and using the larger surface of a fingertip doesnt afford the precision needed to perform some of the basic actions in the game.

There also isnt much reason to go back and play the game once youve beaten it, as the puzzles and story dont change. One important point to bring up is that Puzzle Agent looks far better on the iPad than it does on the iPhone. Many of the textures are blurry and show signs of artifacting, and are a far cry from the App Store screen shots that look like they are optimized for Retina Display. This leads me to believe that its just a bug with the release version that doesnt allow it to display the game in the proper resolution, although I have yet to confirm this. It doesnt completely ruin the game, but it is a significant distraction. The iPad version doesnt seem to exhibit this problem, and hopefully the issue gets rectified with the iPhone version soon.

Even with these issues, Puzzle Agent is still a really enjoyable experience. And thats what it really boils down to its better served as an exceptional entertainment experience rather than an exceptional game. The art style, music, voice acting, and story are incredibly well done, but the controls and puzzles are pretty hit and miss. If youre looking for something akin to an enjoyable interactive movie, Puzzle Agent serves this purpose really well.
