All the way back in the middle of December of last year we first got our hands on EAs Mirrors Edge [$4.99] for the iPhone, but it came without any solid release date. Mirrors Edge then disappeared until the iPad launch when Mirrors Edge for iPad [$9.99] popped up once again. Back then, we figured the iPhone release was immanent, but once again, it never came. Tonight is finally the night, and after spending quite a bit of time with the game today, it seems remarkably similar to the iPad version, downsized to the iPhone. In fact, its so similar to our preview from last year that everything I said back then is still relevant.

The world of Mirrors Edge is set in the future, where a totalitarian regime is in power and an underground resistance powered by runners move information around on foot to avoid to watchful eye of the government which have implemented intense levels of surveillance across all communication mediums. You play as Faith, one of these runners.

The game is controlled using very simple swiping gestures that all feel very natural. Swiping right or left makes you run in that direction, swiping up makes you jump, and swiping down makes you slide. When you run across opposition, you can also use similar gestures to take them out with a variety of moves such as sweeping their legs out from under them or jump kicking them. There are many other interactions with different obstacles you come across, like jumping off spring boards, sliding down zip lines, and wall-running across billboards.

All of these things can be seen in the following gameplay video:

If you are like me and enjoyed the idea behind the console version of Mirrors Edge, but didnt really like the first person viewpoint and all the issues that caused in a platforming environment, you will love the iPhone version of the game. All of the visibility problems are gone thanks to the 3rd person view, and the game as a whole has been transformed in to a fun reaction game instead of an often frustrating and sometimes motion-sickness inducing first person experience.

New additions to Mirrors Edge since last year include new leaderboards that track your time through every level along with a whole heap of achievements to soak up and artwork to unlock. The whole game is optimized for the Retina Display of the iPhone 4, and looks really great in motion. This doesnt mean it wont run well on older devices, as forum members are reporting that Mirrors Edge even runs just fine on the first generation iPod touch.

Mirrors Edge is an effortless recommendation, and while Im not sure waiting all this time has made the game any better, Im glad its finally here. Sure, there have been tons of running games in the past year but Mirrors Edge still is able to stand on its own, even after all this time. Playing through the game is a really cool experience, the controls work well, and just like the iPad game EA did a fantastic job of nailing the look and feel of the Mirrors Edge universe.

Today Apple held its media event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and unveiled its work in significantly evolving a number of its mobile and media products. I had a chance to see it all first hand and spend some hands-on time with the fruits of the companys recent labor.

The announcement that is likely of the most interest to our readers is the arrival of the new iPod touch, thinner than ever and featuring the same razor-sharp Retina display used in the iPhone 4. And, holding the new device in my hand, I can confirm that the screen is every bit as sharp as that of the iPhone 4. The upgraded device is, indeed, basically "an iPhone 4 without the phone," with a few exceptions. It utilizes the same A4 processor used in the iPhone 4 and the iPad, and features integrated gyroscopes for added in-game control precision. It has front- and back-facing cameras, as well, allowing FaceTime video chats. But the rear-facing camera offers a relatively low 960720 pixel resolution, as compared to 25921936 pixels on the iPhone 4. That means it produces photos that are only 14% the size of those taken with big brother iPhone 4.

But, were gamers here And in that capacity, the new iPod touch is a golden mobile gaming device. During todays event, Steve Jobs indicated that the iPod touch is presently the #1 selling mobile game device, outselling Sony and Nintendos devices, combined. He revealed that 1.5 billion entertainment and game app downloads have passed out of the App Store. With the dramatic enhancements on most every front that the new iPod touch puts in the hands of gamers, we dont expect the touch to give up the crown anytime soon.

Another big announcement that Steve had in store is the reinvented Apple TV. No longer a scolding-hot slab of metal and plastic with the footprint of a Mac mini, the new Apple TV is a quarter the size of its predecessor, shrouded in black plastic, and cool to the touch.

This time around, Apple dispensed with local media storage and has positioned the new unit as a video streaming device, built on a video rental model. First-run HD movies can be rented at $4.99 per, with HD TV shows available at $.99 an episode all HD. Netflix streaming is integrated, as well. And all of the local media sharing capabilities of the original device tying to computers in your home for media display on TV are preserved, with the notable addition of media streaming from an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. And all that, which I can confirm fits comfortably in the palm of your hand, can be had for just $99.

The new Apple TV should be of particular interest to our readers for another reason its based on Apples A4 processor. Intel is not inside, this time around. Given that, its clear that the new device is based on some form of OS X for the ARM processor. Apple isnt calling it iOS but, if its not iOS proper, its something extremely close. But, likely, it actually is iOS under the hood. Daring Fireballs John Gruber recently lent strong confirmation of that, as well.

And if, indeed, the new Apple TV is an iOS device, is there an App Store in its future? Lets hope so

Apple also showed a new iPod shuffle which, happily, brings back the buttons of the previous versions and also demonstrated the new iPod nano. The nano is about the size of the shuffle, but features a multitouch display and a user interface styled after iOS though its not iOS-based. Its a pretty amazing device to play with, extremely light, small, and functional. Its not improvements all around with this one, though; the new nano lacks video recording as well as playback capabilities. It seems Apples decided thats functionality to be found only in the iPhone and iPod touch.

On the software front, Apple has released iTunes 10 available now, which offers several interface improvements as well as Ping, a new social network of sorts that allows iTunes users to follow one another and share news of what theyre listening to online. Facebook integration is in place as well. iOS 4.1 will be released next week and will include a number of new features including the launch of Game Center Apples leaderboard network. Other improvements include bug fixes, and performance enhancements for 3G owners. iOS 4.2 was also previewed which will finally bring OS 4 to the iPad and is due in November.

Its clear from todays event that Apple has been keeping a laser focus on the areas that have become its clear domain: media and mobile.

The latest in the Samsung Galaxy S line-up, the Epic 4G, has arrived and we wanted to bring you our first impressions. First things first lets talk "phone talk" before we get into our first impression. The Epic 4G boast the latest in processor technology with the Hummingbird Cortex A8 1GHz processor. Out of the box the Epic 4G provides ample storage capacity with its 512 MB ROM as well as an included 16 GB micro SD card to store your media. The screen is powered by a 4.0-inch Super AMOLED capacitive display that offers HD-like quality. Our review unit is running Android 2.1 build Samsung ECLAIR.DG27 which to my understanding is what is shipping to its customers. The Epic 4G is using the custom skin from Samsung named TouchWiz 2.5, which offers its customers a unique feel for the Android platform.

The first time you turn on the Samsung Epic 4G you feel like a kid in the candy store. The vivid 4.0-inch screen comes to life and you see colors that you thought never existed. At 4 inches the device felt a bit wide in my hands but I adjusted to its size quickly. The body of the phone is a hard plastic and feels as such. Having said that it should be noted that I was skeptical about the plastic body at first but the more I held it the more solid the phone began to feel.

Lets not forget the feature that sets the Epic 4G apart from other Galaxy S models currently on the market, the full qwerty keyboard. When you slide the keyboard down you cant help but take a step back. The five rows of evenly spaced keys screams "please write an email". If keyboards are not your thing than you can use the built in Swype which allows you to type using a continuous finger motion to input text faster than ever before. With several options available typing on the Epic 4G is designed to please almost everyone.

Turning the phone over you will find a delightful 5.0 Megapixel autofocus camera accompanied by a flash for those indoor and night shots. On the front you have a VGA front facing camera that you can use with supported software to immerse yourself in video chat with your friend and family.

What is a smartphone without numerous methods to connect to the internet. The Epic 4G offered by Sprint doesnt let us down. Out of the box you have the option to connect to Sprints new 4G network where available along side the already widely deployed 3G network. If you are one of the lucky ones to have 4G in your area you could in theory achieve speeds on average between 3-6 Mbps. The device also offers WiFi using 802.11 b/g/n to fully utilize hi-speed access points. Feel like sharing some of that data? With the built in mobile hot spot support you can share your 3G/4G with up to 5 Wi-Fi enabled devices at one time. When it comes to connectivity the Epic 4G has its bases covered.

We will go into an in depth analysis of the device in the coming week and answer any questions you may have regarding the Samsung Epic 4G offered exclusively at Sprint. Let us know any questions you may have and we will do our best to answer them in full review coming soon. In the meantime enjoy the official specs and unboxing video below.

The folks from TmoNews have shared the price for the upcoming T-Mobile G2. It would cost $199.99 with a contract after a $50 mail-in rebate.Looks like it would cost $499.99 without a contract. But its not clear if it would be available to non-T-Mobile customers on Pay-as-you go.

The T-Mobile G2 is expected to be launched shortly to mark the 2 year anniversary of the first Android Phone launch. The T-mobile G1 was the first Android phone to hit consumers and we still love the device in and play with it in our labs. The only bummer on the T-Mobile G1 was the incredibly poor battery life and the poor Camera. Hope HTC and T-mobile surprise us with the G2. The leaked pics of the device are certainly interesting

The folks from Skyfire have released more info about their upcoming iPhone app.

watch the video below to see the browser in action

Skyfires Cloud Technology May End Public Standoff Over Flash on "iDevices"

Mountain View, CA August 31, 2010 Skyfire is submitting a mobile browser to Apples App Store capable of playing Flash video while adhering to all Apples guidelines regarding HTML5 open-video standards on Apple devices.

Skyfire 2.0 for iPhone follows on the heels of Skyfires recent launch on Android, which has now become one of the most popular third-party browsers on Googles mobile platform, with nearly a million downloads in its first three months.

Skyfire 2.0 is the first mobile browser built for the social media generation and makes the mobile Internet experience faster, Flash-enabled and fun, including smart media recommendations.
Whats in Skyfire 2.0 for iPhone:

Flash Video The "Video" icon enables users to play millions of Flash videos around the web that otherwise do not play on mobile. This unlocks content trapped behind those error messages with question marks and blue Legos by transcoding the Flash content into HTML5 on Skyfires servers.

Related Content The "Explore" icon brings the most relevant content on the Internet to a users fingertips based on what they are viewing at the time. The Explore button pulls video, buzz, news, images and other sites from the web based on what is on the current page.
Adherence to Apples Standards:

Skyfire for iPhone was built in tight accordance to Apple guidelines, including the use of a WebKit browser core shared with Safari, and h.264 adaptive streaming.
Skyfires famed cloud-computing technology translates Flash video on the fly from millions of web sites into HTML5 formats, and supports iOS devices via Apples HTTP live streaming standard. Skyfire also avoids the concerns raised in Steve Jobs recent essay regarding Flash on mobile devices. By optimizing Flash for iPhones and network conditions in the Cloud, Skyfire improves performance and maximizes battery life while playing video. The browser also avoids alternate runtime environments and other security vulnerabilities.

"Were excited to submit a mobile browser for iPhone and iPod Touch that addresses Apples concerns regarding Flash deployment on mobile devices," explains Jeff Glueck, CEO of Skyfire. "Rather than enabling Flash, Skyfire will translate videos into Apple standards. Skyfire supports HTML5 but at the same time, we recognize that the transition to HTML5 for 100 million Flash publishers will take years. We hope to bridge that gap and solve a problem for consumers who want access to millions of previously-unavailable videos on their iPhones."

An Advantage for AT&T:

Not only does Skyfire enable Flash video while adhering to Apples guidelines, it offers a major enhancement to video data compression for AT&T. Skyfire compresses video data by an average of 75%, reducing buffer time, enhancing battery life and easing the network congestion that has caused user complaints in major metropolitan areas.

Be First in Line:

iPhone users who are interested in learning more about Skyfire on iPhone should find us on Facebook, or follow @Skyfire on Twitter to stay updated or sign up for an e-mail alert as soon as Skyfire 2.0 is approved for iPhone.

Apples press event starts in just a few moments, which is currently being streamed live on apple.com. The catch is, you either need to be using an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Safari on a Mac. If you dont have any of these things, MacRumors has posted a workaround involving some trickery with the open source media player VLC. As mentioned in our previous post, new iPods are expected, as well as some potential news regarding the Apple TV and even some changes to the iTunes store. In just a bit well find out just how accurate the rumor community really was this time around.

If youre at work, or cant get the stream to work, this post will be constantly updated with events that transpire at the keynote that pertain to things that App Store gamers would be interested in. For complete coverage, swing over to MacRumors.

Our own Blake Patterson is currently in the convention center, and will be providing us with awesome photos of the event for those of you who cant get on the stream.. The broadcast of the event so far is holding up quite well, and has amazing video quality. Well see if it holds up as the press conference starts in a minute.

At 12:00 on the dot, Steve Jobs takes the stage and points out Woz who is in the audience. Jobs starts out with an update on their new retail locations in France, China, and Great Britain, all beautifully engineered with Apples standard store design in three iconic locations. Moving on, Steve gets right in to iOS. He describes it as a "revolution in touch and apps," boasting over 120 million iOS devices shipped so far and 230,000 iOS activations per day. New activations. 6.5 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store, or, 200 apps every second.

Steve jumps right in to iOS 4.1, citing tons and tons of bug fixes including the proximity sensor, Bluetooth, and performance boosts on the iPhone 3G. Non-destructive HDR photos and the ability to upload HD video via WiFi is being thrown in along with the debut of Game Center.

Game Center is "all about multi-player games". Weve already heard about the features of Game Center, but Steve is going over how you can challenge friends, match up games, and compare scores with others. Games spotted as demo games include Angry Birds and others.

After that, he invited Mike Capps of epic games on stage to further demonstrate Game Center and reveal their first game for iOS devices which is just codenamed Project Sword. The graphics look absolutely phenomenal, and the framerate good as well. They move on to show how inviting players to other games work, along with a live multiplayer game with two players dueling with swords.

Jobs takes the stage again, and mentions that 4.1 will be available next week for the iPhone and iPod touch and will be a completely free download. Steve also offers a sneak peek at iOS 4.2 which is going to be "all about iPad" and will include Game Center as well along with several other new features. 4.2 also includes something called "AirPlay" which allows for media to be streamed from iTunes directly to the iPad. 4.2 will be released in November and will also be a free update for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Moving on to iPods, Steve mentions this is a "music event" and quotes a staggering figure of 275 million iPods sold to date. Ramping up to the new iPod reveal, Jobs mentions that they release new iPods every year and this year is no different with new designs for every model. "The biggest change in the iPod lineup ever." The iPod Shuffle goes back to something that looks closer to the 2nd generation iPod shuffle with buttons, while maintaining the voiceover and playlist functionality of the previous iPod Shuffle.

The iPod Nano has shrunk even further, now has a multitouch screen, and looks exactly like we thought it would from the leaked cases that made the rounds on rumor sites earlier. Unfortunately, it seems that the widescreen display and camera have been axed. The touch interface looks just like the iPod touch, only down-sized for the smaller display. Of course the iPod touch is next, and since its release has become the most popular iPod.

According to Steve, the iPod touch has become the #1 portable game player in the world. It outsells the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP combined, Currently the iPod touch holds over 50% of the marketshare for portable gaming, and has seen 1.5 billion downloads of games and entertainment apps just to the iPod touch. The new iPod touch is even thinner, surprisingly so.

The new iPod touch has the same Retina Display of the iPhone, the A4 chip, the 3-axis Gyro, iOS 4.1, and FaceTime with a front facing camera along with a rear camera capable of HD video. As an aside, I just found what Im getting everyone in my family for Christmas. iMovie now works with the new iPod touch, and FaceTime works between both iPod touch users and iPhone 4 users. 3 models are offered, 8 GB, 32GB, and 64GB for $229, $299, and $399 respectively.

All of these new iPods will be available next week, and will be available for pre-order today.

Once again moving along, Steve starts citing statistics from iTunes such as nearly crossing the 12 billion song download threshold and 160 million accounts with credit cards and one click shopping enabled. iTunes is expected to surpass sales of CDs in the US next year, so they decided to ditch the CD in the logo with a new logo for iTunes 10 along with other refinements. Interestingly enough, Apple is taking on Last.FM with a new service called "Ping" which is a social network of sorts to see what your friends are listening to inside of the program.

And here comes the inevitable one more thing Apple TV.

Big name developers just love setting their iTunes Connect release dates to Thursdays. Every week around this time we start seeing new releases slowly pop up in international markets, then filter out to the rest of the world as the Earth spins and it slowly becomes Thursday across the planet. This week is no different, and tonight at 11:00 PM EST all of the following games will be available for download in the US App Store. Or even sooner if youre east of us.

Mirrors Edge for iPhone, $4.99 We first previewed this game in late 2009, and spent months wondering when it was going to be released. We found our answer as Mirrors Edge for iPad [$9.99] landed on the App Store as an iPad-only launch title for Apples then new device. Back in April we thought it was inevitable that the game would be released for the iPhone yet, but we never suspected it would take nearly six months to happen.

Heres the gameplay video we shot from our preview last year:

From my brief time with Mirrors Edge on the iPhone, it plays just the same as the iPad version and is seemingly identical to the preview we did before of the iPhone version. Mirrors Edge for the iPhone comes packed with Retina Display friendly graphics and looks outstanding on the iPhone 4.

Puzzle Agent, $4.99 / HD We had some hands-on time with this game not too long ago, and its definitely something any fan of Professor Layton style games needs to pick up. In the game you play as Nelson Tethers, an agent of the FBI Puzzle Research Division and need to investigate the happenings of an eraser factory in Minnesota.

Puzzle Agent has already been released for the PC on Steam, and has been well received by most gamers. We thought it was a decent port in our preview, but were going to spend more time with it to see if that still holds true as we get deeper than a brief preview allows.

Other potentially noteworthy games being released tonight include two new offerings from Namco who apparently have no problem juicing poor old Pac Man for all hes worth. PAC-CHAIN [$4.99] is an action puzzle game for the iPad where you tap groups of similarly colored ghosts from the game board with all kinds of Pac Man themed power-ups. Their other release tonight is Mishap [$4.99] a hidden object game for the iPhone that at least looks slightly intriguing with the inclusion of mini-games.

Finally, theres a new Chillingo iPad game on the verge of being released. Lamp of Aladdin [$4.99] is another hidden object game, but the matching mini-game looks like it could be interesting and theres something about the above trailer thats oddly alluring.

Were going to spend the day playing through as many of these games as possible, and like every Wednesday, plan on having reviews available by the time the games appear for download in the US App Store.

As you know, before Facebook, MySpace was the leading social networking website but times have changed and MySpace lost its popularity. According to the statistics, Facebooks popularity rose for 70 percent while MySpaces popularity dropped for 25 percent in the last year.

As for MySpace, it has 61 million monthly users while Facebook has 146 million users on monthly basis. It seems the MySpace is losing the war and even recent changes to the profile layouts cannot stop the MySpaces defeat. Therefore, MySpace has decided to add a new feature that will allow MySpace users to send status updates directly to Facebook.

It seems that MySpace is following Twitters example since this feature will allow you to send status updates from your MySpace account on the similar way that Twitter users send status updates to the their Facebook accounts. So far, Facebook hasnt developed a feature that will allow you to send status updates to your MySpace profile but were hoping that well see it in the future.

This feature will come handy to Facebook and MySpace users, but will it be enough to keep MySpace alive and appealing to its users?
