So, about that MaXplosion [$.99] thing you know, that story about Twisted Pixel Games not digging MaXplosion because of how much it boosted from Twisted Pixel's Xbox Live Arcade title Splosion Man? That thing. Capcom issued its official response this afternoon stating that, yes, it did see Splosion Man before it came out but, no, that team and Capcom Mobile never talked about Splosion Man. MaXplosion, in other words, isn't what happens when you pitch your title to the publisher. In fact, Capcom is "saddened by this situation" and wants to earn back your trust, as a fan, in the company.

It also wants to rebuild developers' trust. This is an angle we didn't take in our last news story because, well, most of you aren't game developers. You see, this MaXplosion debacle makes Capcom look like Dr. Wily in the eyes of indie developers. Would you want to pitch a game to Capcom after seeing what happened here? Nah, man, you wouldn't. Well, maybe you would. Eating makes your tummy feel good.

Anyway, here's the full response:

"While Twisted Pixel did have discussions with our console game team about publishing Splosion Man on game consoles, Capcom Mobile is a different division of Capcom with separate offices and as such, had no prior knowledge of any meetings between the console game team and Twisted Pixel. MaXplosion was developed independently by Capcom Mobile. Nonetheless, we are saddened by this situation and hope to rebuild the trust of our fans and friends in the gaming community."

Presenting the FoneArena LG Optimus One Review. The P500 is LG's attempt to conquer the affordable smartphone segment. At one point of time , the Korean handset maker was pumping out too many handsets into the market that we could barely keep track of. But over the last 1 year , the company has decided to launch fewer phones aimed at specific sections of the market. The Optimus One is one such attempt to fight back into the smartphone market. The specs of the phone look quite interesting considering the price point of the phone. In this review lets take a in-depth look at how LG has succeeded in delivering a great android phone.

Box Contents

  • LG Optimus One P500
  • 1500 mAh Battery
  • 2 GB microSD Card
  • USB cable
  • AC Plug
  • Stereo headphones
  • Manual

You can check out our unboxing here

Hardware

The first thing one would notice about the phone is the metal bezel around the phone which is mostly made of plastic. On the front you would find the 3.2 inch capacitive display sporting a resolution of 320480 pixels. The display is not super responsive but it does the job . Seems like it's made of plastic and not glass but we are fine with it. Below the display you have backlit keys for menu , home , back and search. The home and back button are slightly raised. LG thinks that these are the most used buttons and gave it special treatment great move. Above the display you have the LG branding and the earpiece.

On the top you would find the 3.5 mm audio jack on the left and the power/lock key on the right.

LG OPTIMUS 1

You also have the small ridge for opening the back cover.

On the bottom you have the microUSB port which is used for charging and syncing and a microphone.

LG OPTIMUS 1

The volume rocker keys are present on the right side and the left side is free.

LG OPTIMUS 1

The 3 MP Camera is present on the back with some Google branding below it.

OS / UI

LG has made minor changes to the stock Android UI. Most of the changes are related to the themes. LG offers it's own keyboard while we preferred the default android keyboard.

As you can see in the screenshot above , this is main home screen. LG had created a custom area for commonly used shortcuts such as phone , contacts, messaging and browser.

You have a notification bar which has icons on the top with toggles for wifi, bluetooth, GPS , data and sound.

You can also set the number of home screens as 5 or 7

Phone Calls and Messaging

We had no trouble with phone calls on this device. It managed to pick up 3G signals even in areas of poor reception.

It supports SMS , MMS and Email. For Email you can choose to use the inbuilt Email app or the Gmail app.The Email app supports Microsoft Exchange mail. You can add multiple accounts.

Connectivity / Browser

The Optimus One offers plenty of connectivity options. It supports Bluetooth 2.1 , WiFi b/g , 3G/EDGE, GPS. You can also turn your phone into a WiFi Hotspot. The phone charges via microUSB and connects to the PC the sameway. There's a 3.5mm audio hack for connecting the ear phones.

The browser if pretty fast as the phone runs on Android 2.2. Sadly it does not support Flash player. But it does play Youtube videos .

Google Maps works pretty well including Navigation and StreetView.

Camera

LG OPTIMUS 1

You get only a 3 MP Camera without flash or a camera key. You would have to use the onscreen controls to capture pics. While the Camera does manage to take some good pics in well-lit conditions it fails in low light areas.

There are plenty of options in the camera app.

Check out some camera samples below.

We tackled the low-light by increasing the exposure.

Multimedia

The loud speaker is pretty loud on this phone.

The music player is almost the same stock android player. Same goes for the video player too.

The video player does support a wide variety of file formats including DivX and Xvid.

The FM Radio has a nice little tuner UI.

Youtube videos play pretty well and supports even High Quality.

Although we would have appreciated a slightly larger display. But we are more than satisfied with the entertainment experience considering the price point.

Apps / Android Market

The phone comes with some apps pre-installed depending on the country. Our phone came with Twiter , Facebook , Thinkfree Office. Anything you download from the Android Market gets stored under the Downloads section. The UI lets you create new categories and you can customize what apps go where.

Conclusion

The Optimus One is not the fastest Android phone in the market currently but it does offer a lot of features at an affordable price point. It does not feel cheap despite being made of plastic.

If you are looking for a reasonably spec-ed , reliable Android phone , the Optimus One is for you. We are sure you wont be disappointed. The battery life is one of the best we have seen on any Android phone. It kept running for nearly 2 days before it went dead.

It is powered by a 600 MHz processor and has 512MB of RAM. There were lags during operation at times but not a deal breaker for sure. The phone never crashed or stalled during our review.

Pros

  • Simple yet attractive design
  • Android 2.2
  • Fast Browser
  • Above average battery life
  • Value for money
  • Loudspeaker

Cons

  • Mediocre Camera and no front facing camera
  • No Flash support in Browser

The handset is currently available for Rs.12500 approx in India and is sold through various carriers in USA and Europe. It has managed to sell more than 2 million units since launch.

RIM is one of the leading names in the mobile industry. They have launched a lot of good device, and today our friends over at BGR got their hands on the images of three new upcoming BlackBerry smartphones. They leaked the image of Torch 2, Curve "Apollo" and last but not least BlackBerry Dakota. Let's talk about all the phones one by one.

Late last month we took a look at Rappin Granny [Free] by Nathan Hunley, who just so happens to be half of Igloo Games. If that doesn't ring a bell, they were responsible for some ancient App Store classics like Dizzy Bee [99] and Bed Bugs [99]. Both of these games might seem a little dated today, but when they were originally released they were very substantial games. In fact, I distinctly remember being fairly impressed that my phone was capable of playing a game like Dizzy Bee.

Anyway, back when the game was first released I explained the premise of Rappin Granny in our review:

A rappin' granny struts down a hallway dishing out presents which you have to give to the correct recipient. In order to figure out who to give which present to, you have to listen to the rap which is filled with clues. These clues initially start out very simple, but get tricky later in the rap as you're forced to determine who someone's wife is, for instance.

The entire game is wrapped around a scoring system that awards more if you're able to deliver the presents to the beat. Also, you can score bonus points by flicking presents to their recipient instead of dragging them to their hands. The granny's rap is funny, the gameplay is silly, and the music of the game has a real PaRappa The Rapper feel to it.

Our major concern with the game was its complete lack of replay value once you memorized the rap, and the fact that it's a holiday themed game which doesn't give it much of a purpose outside of the holiday season. However, Rappin Granny is still a very cool concept for a game that you really should download while it's free. It likely won't stay on your device very long, but it will be fun while it lasts. I really hope Nathan Hunley evolves this concept further, as Rappin Granny really feels like the start of something that could be really rad.

Today Apple have released the first beta version of iOS 4.3 for the iOS Developers program. iOS 4.3 update will be available for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPod Touch 3rd generation and iPad.

Developers who have so far installed the beta version are reporting new features in iOS 4.3 including the mobile hotspot feature (just like tethering) that was one of the major features of the Verizon iPhone that was announced yesterday. Though considering worldwide, this feature may be disabled depending on your network / carrier. So we'll have to wait and see if carriers like AT&T will support the feature.

Its also being revealed that iOS 4.3 beta allows users to stream videos from apps to compatible devices via AirPlay. iOS 4.3 will give iPad users back the option to use the side switch as a mute switch or screen rotation lock.

It looks like iOS 4.3 has some cool new gestures built specifically for the iPad. 4 & 5 finger gestures; pinch to the home screen, swipe up to reveal multitasking tray, swipe left/right to switch apps.Apple seems to have also changed the FaceTime icon as well.

Unfortunately, iOS 4.3 is not available for iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2nd generation, which indicates that iOS 4.2.1 was the last iOS software update for these devices.

We will keep everyone posted of any further news regarding the new iOS 4.3.

In October of last year we first caught wind of Martin Kool's loving homage to retro adventure games, Sarien.net. Nearly a month later, we got a hands on preview of Space Quest, the first game Martin ported from its previous web-based browser state to an iPad-specific version that was custom tailored for both the screen and input of the device. Not long after that, Space Quest went live. While I'm not entirely sure how many people played the web-based version of the game to completion, it sure was awesome to have, and was a great tech demo for just what was possible via a web app on the iPad.

Today we got word that the rest of the Sarien.net catalog has been ported over, and in addition to iPhone support, the whole site is now hosted via Amazon's content distribution network to make loading even faster. Most of the games have even been extensively tweaked to be easy to play on the touch interface.

I'm not sure how much more detailed I need to get on this because, well, all the games are completely free to play and don't require any kind of installation beyond navigating your iOS device to sarien.net, tapping the game you want to play, adding a bookmark icon for it, then launching it. The single down side (if you'd even call it that) to all this is that since the games are played online via a web browser, you need an internet connection, but that seems to be a decent tradeoff to being able to instantly play such fantastic vintage adventure games for free on your iPhone or iPad.

A few weeks back we reviewed Burn the Rope [99], the puzzle game with the sort of familiar sounding name but really unique gameplay. In Burn the Rope, you ignite a single point of an elaborate picture made out of rope with the goal of burning as much of it as possible. The catch is that the flame will only burn upwards, so you must twist your device around as the flame burns along the contours of whatever picture you are burning. It's a clever game and quite a lot of fun too.

Yesterday developer Big Blue Bubble released the first update to Burn the Rope. One of our biggest gripes with the game in our review was the inconsistent way the flame would burn around sharp corners in a picture. Even if you swear you burned around the corner properly, the game had a tendency to leave just the tiniest bit of rope unburned, thus preventing you from getting 100% completion and a gold medal on the level. It was frustrating to say the least, but this issue seems to have been completely squashed as I have yet to encounter it since updating. Also, it appears that you no longer need a complete 100% to earn gold, so even if you do leave a tiny portion of rope unburnt then you can still manage to get a gold medal.

Besides this much needed fix, the new update also contains a new area with 16 brand new levels to play through. Game Center is now integrated with online leaderboards for each area and 30 achievements to obtain. The ability to play music from your iPod library has been added, as well as your choice of 3 additional flames to pick from which are unlocked by doing things like rating the game in iTunes or "liking" its Facebook page. The flames are cosmetic only, but I actually really like being able to mix up which one I use. My personal favorite is the one that sparks like the fuse on a stick of dynamite.

Burn the Rope was pretty awesome initially, and this new update has fixed most of my issues with the game as well as added a lot of new content. My only request now would be for Retina Display graphics, and the developer has said in our forums that this feature should be coming sometime down the line. A lot of other folks seem to be enjoying Burn the Rope too, as since our initial review the game has skyrocketed into the #2 position overall in the US App Store. If you have yet to check out Burn the Rope, now is a great time to grab it as the game is currently 99 but should be jumping up to $1.99 with the next update.

Google Translate is a popular tool, but it's going to become even more popular now as Google has improved its Translate app for Android OS. So what does the improved version of Google Translate for Android have to offer?

The biggest improvement is the Conversation Mode. Though Conversation mode is still in alpha phase it works pretty good because it translates your voice conversations in real time.

That's right, now you can speak to anyone in your native language and Google Translate will convert your speech into other person's native language. So far, only English and Spanish languages are supported, but Google plans to add other languages over time. Besides Conversation mode, there are some UI changes that offer cleaner and easier interface with dropdown menus.

Overall, Google Translate for Android has a lot to offer, and although Conversation mode doesn't work perfectly, it's a great innovative addition. If you want to try the latest version of Google Translate, make sure that you visit the Android Market and that you have Android 2.1 or later.

T-Mobile releases their latest campaign video with "Ms 4G" taking a stab at the iPhone 4 on both the Verizon and AT&T network. Claiming to have to largest and faster 4G network nationwide, T-Mobile clearly identifies that if you fancy an iPhone 4 you aren't going to be going anywhere fast, at least with 4G.

On January 6, 2011 Philipp Humm made his first public appearance as president and CEO announcing the plans to upgrade the T-Mobile 4G network by doubling the speeds as well as releasing 25 new 4G devices. T-Mobile is clearly making a point that they want to be the leading 4G network with the most devices available to its users. Will "Ms 4G" still be smiling after the other carriers finish their 4G network infrastructure? Watch the video and let us know what you think.
