Uncharacteristically Apple. The invite sent out last week to the media wasn't subtle or discreet as the company is often wont to be. Instead, it showed an image of a calendar app icon peeled back to reveal the corner of an iPad that was very much identical to the one that is running on short supplies in Apple stores worldwide as you read this. So the next iPad is upon us, and now's a great time to take stock of all the rumors and predictions around the new device. But before we start, the big question, at least to me is which one will it be iPad 2, or a 1.5 equivalent? It boils down to this just how much does Apple need an iPad 2 beyond the simple 'marketing' matter of keeping up with the Joneses? Sure, the competition has recently trumpeted impressive specs such as dual-core processors, HDMI output, video chat, HD camcorders, and 4G wireless connections, but I for one feel they're missing point completely in trying to beat the iPad on specs. Where the first generation iPad scores is on experience the breadth and depth of apps (games included) that run like a dream on the iPad are yet to see serious competition from tablet specific apps on Android. Plus, the iPad's 10 hours of battery life has set the bar really high for the competition, and all those dual core processors the competition is sporting aren't going to help one bit in this department. I'd even be willing to wager that the first-gen is good for some more time yet, possibly with modest improvements, allowing for a bigger September iPad 2 update to capitalize on the massive holiday shopping season. All this points to why the updates I sense we'll see come March 2 will be incremental and evolutionary, not revolutionary.

  • FaceTime support via a front-facing camera: A no-brainer, given how Apple's built in FaceTime support and branding in all of its other products, and I'd be downright shocked if I don't see this make the cut. A rear-facing camera? Not so much, especially if you consider lifting a 9.7-inch iPad to take a photo!
  • No retina display: The screen may well be improved from the first gen, but don't expect to see a retina display on a 10-incher just yet a screen like that would massively increase the number of pixels, therefore straining both the iPad's processor and its battery, not to mention the price point. But boy, would I love to be proven wrong on this one, if Apple's figured out how to solve this engineering problem. (I'm sure developers will be pulling their hair out with the new resolution they'd have to factor in!)
  • Slimmer, lighter form factor: The iPad will be thinner, no two ways about it. Apple loves to take the knife to any extra flab a first-gen device carries, and the iPad is no different. Expect some drastic cuts in this department, as the iPad looks to distance itself, weight wise, from the already light MacBook Air.
  • Better internals: Under the hood improvements are certain, but I'm not sure if Apple will go the whole hog with a dual core processor. The hit on battery life is one thing, and I'm not entirely convinced the iPad needs a dual core processor … just yet. The first-gen seems to do just fine, so maybe a faster single core processor? And more memory for sure, at least 512 MB of RAM, if not the 1GB like the Xoom offers.
  • No SD Card memory expansion Slot Goes against the grain of all things Apple/iOS. Enough said.
  • Gyroscope: First introduced in the iPhone 4, the three-axis gyroscope allows iOS game developers to take advantage of a one more control dimension and with a gyroscope inside, iPad game designers could offer apps that allow you to rotate around an axis or detect pitch, roll, and yaw. Expect the 3-axis gyro to make a low-key entry, if for nothing but to standardize the iPad in line with the iOS family
  • An additional speaker: Let's face facts, the speaker on the first-gen iPad wasn't bad, but it left a lot to be desired from a multimedia entertainment device. Apple may just add an extra speaker along the top edge to aid in stereo separation and to avoid the possibility of the sound being drowned out by both speakers being blocked by a stand or hand.
  • Near immediate availability: We've all tired of wait times of several months that are expected for the latest breed of Android and web OS tablets, so I wouldn't be surprised that courtesy the modest enhancements, Apple is able to push the new iPad out to stores within a week, if not immediately. What lends credence to this is the fact that Apple resellers such as Best Buy are reporting deleted inventory statuses for first-gen iPads.
  • A price drop: With the competition not being able to match the iPad's price point, Apple could serve up a master stroke by selling the first gen iPad possibly with lower capacity at a lower price point, allowing more folks to get into the door on to the bandwagon.
  • Thunderbolt?: This one is risky, but with Thunderbolt having just been announced for the MacBook Pros, including the port could make sense for ultra-fast syncing and data transfer between the iPad and new Macs.

iPad 2 predictions aside, maybe the more interesting portion is the tagline below the date which reads "Come see what 2011 will be the year of." Clearly we're going to see more than just the new iPad. Likely candidates include:

iOS 4.3 dates: It's been in beta for a while now, and we're expecting a firm date for the official release. Of course, as we've seen so far, new 4.3 improvements include UI improvements, wireless hotspot support for iPhones and a preview of multitouch gestures for iPad control. Also, could we have a preview of iOS 5 while we're at it, Apple?

Cloud iTunes: Could Apple's $1 billion North Carolina datacenter finally becoming operational in the coming months signal the launch of iTunes in the cloud? If so, expect to be able to store music libraries and device backups in the cloud, stream music/video…the works! And possibly, wireless synching to the cloud will bid a final farewell to iTunes on the desktop (about time!).

And, as we call a wrap on this time's A Byte of Apple, there is one more (possible) thing… popular Apple blog 9to5Mac reports that we may yet see Steve Jobs in attendance for tomorrow's event, but in deference to his medical leave, he may be watching this show from the front row, and not up on stage. Let's see how the event pans out!

As for Sony's gaming consoles, both PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2 are outdated by now, but that doesn't mean that they're dead. In fact, the modding community has made something that allows you to play your PlayStation 2 in a portable way.

Today we have a case mod that comes from England that combines the power of PlayStation 2 and the looks of PlayStation Portable. We still don't know how the modder managed to create something like this, but it looks impressive. Of course, this mod is too bulky to carry with you, and it doesn't have a battery, so you won't be able to carry it with you since you have to keep it plugged in, in order to play.

Despite these flaws, this mod works perfectly and can run PS2 games without any problems. In addition, if you're interested in this mod, its modder is planning to sell it, so do contact him for more details :)

LaCie has announced LaCie Little Big Disk equipped with Thunderbolt technology developed by Intel and initially brought to the market through sales of Apple notebooks, namely the new MacBook Pro range. Designed for massive data storage, LaCie Little Big Disk will raise the bar in terms of data transfer, offering speeds of up to 10 GB/s.

"LaCie is thrilled to be the first company to integrate Thunderbolt technology in the LaCie Little Big Disk" said Philippe Spruch, LaCie director and general manager.

Thunderbolt technology offers a bandwidth of 10 Gbps and impressive runs on two protocols (PCI Express and DisplayPort) simultaneously through a single cable for connectivity with powerful devices such as Little Big Disk and high resolution displays. Thunderbolt carries information through a single cable to peripheral devices with amazing speed and ease the back-up system in minutes.

The LaCie Little Big Disk will be able to provide hours of HD video streaming and can play for hours of multimedia files without sacrificing performance.

Yesterday at GDC we sat down with Brian Robbins of Riptide Games who took us through their latest release, Shadow Ranch [link] (with an "HD" version for iPad [link]), an iOS adaptation of Her Interactive's highly popular Nancy Drew Adventure series.

In a departure from the PC and console originals, the iOS Nancy Drew mobile mystery takes the form of an interactive book that works much like one of the old Choose Your Own Adventure stories. The primary portion of the experience is reading the story presented, eight chapters full of illustrations and media-enhanced hyperlinks. The other part of the app consists of three different kinds of mini-games. The outcome of a variety of hidden object games, word games, and horse racing games determine the path of the story and bring achievements. Several sideline mimi-mysteries are also included.

Brian also showed us Mini Monster Smash! [App Store], the fruit borne of Riptide's all-night coding frenzy at November's 360iDev Game Jam. The goal of the game is to smash a cute little red monster with a flyswatter to get it to fly as far as you can. Along the way the monster will bounce off of trampolines, bombs or float in bubbles.

And, finally, we had a look at an upcoming title called My Pet Zombie, which is being developed jointly with Recharge Studios. It's one for the virtual pet fan who also has a thing for zombies. The game puts a cute little zombie in a graveyard setting on your screen for you to love and nurture. It even dances. But don't take care of it and it's one more tombstone in the graveyard. The game also features social aspects, such as freinds' zombies going on a date, etc.

Shadow Ranch and Mini Monster Smash recently went live in the App Store, and My Pet Zombie is expected in late April or early May as a freemium release.

Halfbrick, the studio behind the enormously popular fruit homicide game, Fruit Ninja [.99 / Lite], are about three months away from debuting a brand new title on the App Store. And there's a twist: it stars a familiar face, Monster Dash's [.99] Barry Steakfries.

Actually, Steakfries and Monster Dash are great starting points when describing this upcoming title, Machinegun Jetpack. It looks and works a lot like Monster Dash. It's a traditional runner, so it has a lone, endless level and randomly generated content.

Where it differs, it really differs. Instead of controlling a protagonist who can merely run, you control an avatar that's hooked into a jetpack. Tapping on the screen keeps Barry afloat, and you'll need to do that to avoid all the vertical obstacles such as electricity or rockets or lasers.

Ratcheting up the intensity of the experience is a goal of Halfbrick's. Perhaps the best example of this is in the "vehicle" pick-ups that give you control of a robot reminiscent of ED-209 or even the motorcycle from Monster Dash. There's also a special gravity suit that lets you to run on the top and bottom of the screen with a tap, and a teleportation power that allows you to jump all over the level.

Here's a video of the game in action from our demo at GDC in San Francisco. The first part is footage from the iPad version; the other is the iPhone version.

At the demo, I was more impressed with the amount of side content as opposed to the explosions, which to be frank, is a little out of character for me. As you play, you'll collect coins that you can then, in turn, spend on upgrades to your jetpack. You can also pick up bigger coins that, at the end of a single play, give you the opportunity to use a massive slot machine. If you're lucky, you'll earn rewards like double coins on your next play or even a Continue that puts you back in the game right where Barry fell. This is good, game-expanding stuff that adds a little more to the "just one more time" play.

Machinegun Jetpack is still three or so months out. Halfbrick told us that it plans to launch the title as a Universal game complete with Game Center support. The target price is also 99 cents, so get ready to take the plunge a little later this year.

In the midst of GDC 2011, EA launched Fight Night Champions for iOS just last night.

Go toe-to-toe with a premium roster of title-holders past and present, and create your own championship legacy in the ring. Experience the true brutality of boxing in the tradition of the highest rated simulation fighting franchise of all time. Featuring innovative gameplay and best-in-class graphic quality, you're looking at the best boxing game on the App Store. It's undisputed.

The $4.99 game promises a game roster of 20 champions including Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali.

We haven't had time to test out the new game, but the discussion thread is showing early positive impressions. One reader posts this gameplay video and some notes:

Please note i'm just going mad in the video, throwing as many punches as possible ,if i was playing like i should i would defend more

As for the question of taking up a lot of the screen with lots of swipes, well yes you can do that i suppose but if playing properly and you don't wanna get K.O'd then better to get 2 or 3 off then step back/defend and then throw a few more.So not a bit deal if played as you should play it,unlike in this video where i'm manic swiping

EA recommends iOS 4.2 for smoother gameplay, and requires a 3GS or above for head-to-head Multiplayer. Dynamic lighting is added for 3rd generation devices and above (3GS, iPod Touch 3rd Gen). Meanwhile, 1st generation devices are not supported at all.

Touch and swipe are what iOS games do best. In my opinion, focusing on these two native user inputs often spawn the best design in iOS games.

These are the two thoughts that hit me as I went hands-on with a demo of MecaPix at GDC in San Francisco yesterday afternoon. It's sort of looks like Tetris with a touch of Space Invaders. And it's also a game with no virtual d-pads or buttons just touch and swipe, the bread and butter of the iPad and iPod Touch.

In Tetris, the idea is to organize descending blocks into piles. In this game, the idea is to draw and fire off ascending blocks (with your finger) in order to clear falling blocks before they reach the bottom of the screen. It's a unique, simple idea that plays off the familiarity we all have with the classic puzzle game, Tetris. It's even got that retro look and similar shapes. Check it out.

But there are twists. For example, some descending block patterns have special abilities packed within their constructions. Bombs can be placed in the middle, and when you hit the bomb, the entire patterns clears. Other patterns have laser blocks that fire adjacent blocks at other constructs falling down at the screen.

So, the idea is to be precise and hit the blocks that matter. There's an ammo counter that keeps you from firing blocks wholesale. Otherwise, you could theoretically just build massive lines of blocks that would eliminate all enemies.

MecaPix mixes things up with classic puzzle elements, creating a cool balance between basic trigger-finger play and thought. One level, one out of around ten in the stage, forced me to consider each of the special blocks in a descending pile and pick the best ones to kill the construction before it reached the end of the screen. It's a neat change of pace.

Precision, and therefore conservation, is rewarded with points. And so are combos. As you anticipate and shoot blocks in the right place, points skyrocket.

There's a lot more to the game that I didn't get to play directly, but demonstrated the amount of depth to be had. There are boss battles, for example, that have you attempting to reach the heart of a tumbling monster. There's also a cool level that uses the classic game Snake as its inspiration. The falling blocks in this level resemble the Snake and squirm, keeping you from drilling the heart without thought.

Mecapix is being built by Robotalism Games, a developer out of Paris. The plan is to launch the game is as soon as they possibly can and at an agreeable price point: a mere .99 cents. From what I saw this afternoon, this might be a very special game. I'll be keeping my eyes on it, for sure, as it combines unique and possibly deep play with the two things that spawn the best games: touch and swipe.

AMD Radeon HD 6990 gets closer to an official release date. The video card based on two series graphics core Cayman, the same used by Radeon HD 6970, has faced similar problems related to maintaining acceptable levels of energy consumption, but the AMD relative is believed to have the advantage of using a less expensive graphics processors.

The specifications for the Radeon HD 6990 promises a total of 3072 stream processors and no more than 4GB memory of gDDR5 (2GB for each GPU). Nevertheless still unconfirmed rumors claim the presence of no less than 3840 stream processors, a detail that would make a serious competitor for the GeForce GTX 595.

Connectivity options include four DisplayPort connectors and only one DVI-D port.

The AMD Radeon HD 6990 video card will probably be slower than the alternative proposed by the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 595, but the winner could be decided ultimately by the availability of products on the market and their subsequent performance / highest price report.

Apple is internally using a gesture-based lock screen for iOS devices that is similar to Android's unique nine-dot lock screen feature. The feature allows the user to set up a pattern who needs to input that same pattern in, instead of a password or a four number code. Apple has already been testing this new lock screen internally for use, in the employee 'Apple Connect' application for iOS devices.

Sources say that none of these feature will show up in the actual iOS build (since Google will probably has patents on this feature), but is only meant for company's testing the mechanism for some of their internal applications in the future. Apple is said to be planning on bringing the nine-dot lock screen feature to theirnew mobile payment system business, on the EasyPay machines.
